DEPARTMENT: Health Education

 

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of the Health Educator is to provide community education on nutrition and physical activity to combat chronic health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension in low income communities.  Service location includes schools, community centers, and other community locations in Service Provider Area (SPA) 7, known as the Southeast Region of Los Angeles County.   Targeted population includes children (Birth to age 18) and their families.

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:  

Under the direction of the Project Manager, the Health Educator performs a variety of functions as outlined in the grant.  Activities include trainings on nutrition, healthy eating, food demonstrations, physical activity demonstrations, consultation, outreach and engagement to schools and other community-based agencies.

  • $23.00 to $25.00/hr starting rate of pay, depending on experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Implements all aspects of services as outlined in the grant’s statement of work; 
  • Completes required documentation and meets deadlines; 
  • Trains and educates grant participants in healthy eating and physical activity;
  • Participates in developing/implementing policies and procedures;
  • Coordinates and integrates this program with other programs in the organization;
  • Participates in outreach and engagement activities in the community;
  • Participates in promoting/marketing services to the community, i.e., schools, hospitals, health clinics, etc.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings;
  • Attends Department of Public Health meetings and trainings as required by the grant;

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health or other related degree from an accredited college or university in the U.S.
  • A minimum of (3 to 5) years of clinical experience with a focus on obesity in low income, culturally diverse communities at-risk for chronic health issues such as diabetes and hypertension.
  • Community-based experience in schools, health clinics, hospitals, and/or public health settings.
  • Computer skills required – proficient in Microsoft Office Software.
  • Bilingual/Spanish required.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employee may be asked to participate in cross-training programs or pursue additional education or training when it is determined to be in the best interest of the company by the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

REASONING ABILITY:  

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, (i.e., calculator, copy machine and computer printer).
  • Constantly converses with staff and clients
  • Frequently operates a motor vehicle to travel to school or home site
  • Frequently needs to position self in order to effectively interact with children of lesser stature
  • Occasionally needs to transport materials (food, clothing, books, etc.) weighing up to 50 pounds for therapeutic activities
  • Frequently needs to use motor vehicle for business purposes.
