The Winchendon School, an independent day and boarding school, seeks to hire a Director of Health Services to provide overall health leadership and oversee the operation of the Health Center. This position would begin in 2025.
The Director of Health Services is an 11-month position (summer may be remote) that oversees the operation of the health services office. They are responsible for planning, regulation compliance, hiring and supervision of the health staff, budgeting, working closely with the Counselor, Dean of Students, and Athletic Trainers, and ensuring records and communications are handled efficiently. The Director also provides nursing care within their scope of practice.
The Director must be a registered nurse or nurse practitioner licensed to practice in Massachusetts who has a special interest in adolescent health care and who understands the particular needs of students living in a boarding school community.
Responsibilities
- Management of all facilities operations as they relate to the medical/nursing needs of the Health Center, as well as confirmation of the professional certifications of both Health Center staff and other healthcare providers who have contact with students.
- Responsible for situations even when the on-call nurse is on.
- Oversees and schedules the nursing staff as well as providers outside of the School to whom students are referred.
- Supervise and/or administer primary care; provide assessment, examination, and referrals according to written medical directives; collect accurate health-related data.
- Provide follow-up care, including medication, treatments, and healthcare information.
- Collaborate with athletic trainers and other health service personnel in establishing a diagnosis, plan of care, and evaluation.
- Assess data collected and make primary decisions on the health management of individual students. Initiate counseling and health education to allow patients to cope with presenting issues, as necessary.
- Assume responsibility for follow-up services, such as laboratory work, tests, and referrals to specialists and therapists. Routinely act as second-opinion consultant for nursing staff.
- Serve as a member of the Safety Team to establish and communicate school protocols for emergent public health issues.
- Assist with the scheduling of appointments with psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists and collaborate with the Counselor to assess the counseling needs of students and make appropriate referrals.
- Make appropriate recommendations regarding student assessment, counseling, medical leaves, and follow-up care and strategies.
- Maintain communication between the School, parents, and health professionals.
- Maintain inventory of all medications, medical supplies, and equipment. Order supplies as needed, within budgetary parameters.
- Maintain proper state and federal licensing for dispensary and medical waste transportation.
- Initiate and maintain administrative functions of the Health Center through the use of information technology and electronic medical records as deemed appropriate by School administrators.
Other assigned responsibilities:
- Hire, train, staff, schedule, and supervise the nursing staff.
- Perform annual evaluation of the nursing staff, identifying areas for individual improvement, as well as ways to improve the overall quality of health care for the community.
- Perform additional duties as directed, including those related to health education and programming.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, be authorized to work in the United States, and successfully pass a background check.
Qualifications:
- BSN required; MSN preferred with experience in school health.
- RN licensed in the State of MA
- Current CPR certification or willing to become certified in an approved course.
School Setting: Winchendon is a co-educational, boarding high school (9-postgraduate) located in North Central Massachusetts. The school is comprised of approximately 268 students (of whom 200 are boarding). The campus and programs may be viewed at the School’s website:
