Location: New Bedford, MA (New Bedford District Court and New Bedford Probate and Family Court)
Job Type: Full-time / Onsite Position (35-hour workweek)

About the Position:

The Court Advocate a.k.a. SAFEPLAN (Safety Assistance for Every Person Leaving Abuse Now) Advocate assists victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking under the guidelines of the SAFEPLAN (Safety Assistance for Every Person Leaving Abuse Now) Program.

  • Identify and prioritize clients' self-identified case management and counseling needs. Develop customized plans.
  • Make initial contact with clients within 24 hours of being assigned the case.
  • Conduct trauma informed, survivor-centered, goal-oriented counseling advocacy with clients on a regular basis.
  • Provide crisis intervention to walk-in clients as needed.
  • Co-facilitate group sessions on various relevant topics.
  • Provide referrals for needed services to appropriate agencies and providers.
  • Update and maintain accurate client charts.
  • Provide updates to the Counseling Advocacy Manager.
  • Additional responsibility as a Medical Advocate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

We are seeking a mission-driven individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to collaboration, adaptability, and communication, with a deep equity and social justice mindset. The ideal candidate will be sensitive to and work effectively with culturally diverse populations, building rapport with empathy while maintaining professionalism and boundaries. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as well as excellent organizational and planning abilities, including time management and attention to detail. The candidate should be tech-savvy, proficient in Microsoft Office and online reporting programs.

You'll Stand Out If:

  • You are multi-lingual (Spanish and/or Portuguese) which will allow you to connect with a broader range of clients.
  • You hold an Associate's or bachelor's degree in a legal or human services field.
  • You have three years of experience working with domestic violence or crime victims.
  • You have knowledge of legal issues affecting victims of domestic violence and/or basic understanding of the criminal justice system.
