What are the responsibilities and job description for the Small Group Underwriter position at The Word & Brown Companies?
Purpose of Position: Review Group applications by the Carrier’s guidelines and submit by the applicable deadlines. Follow up with Broker or Sales Office for pending items. The position requires mandatory overtime during months of heavy volume.
Essential Functions:
- Provide Best in Class Service to internal and external customers
- Subject matter expert. Review and test underwriting system changes before they are implemented
- Exceed monthly underwriting metrics by maintaining a minimum quality score of 90%
- Review and complete California and Nevada cases with accuracy in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and prioritization in a fast-paced environment
- Enter case into carrier’s online system if applicable or excel spreadsheet
- Meet turn time requirements on each case and the processing of pending items
- Assist Underwriting Leadership with Pre-Sale Questions or projects as needed
- Provide excellent Customer Service to internal and external customers
- On-site or remote regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job
- Performs other business tasks or functions as assigned

- Strong Customer Service Skills: telephone, e-mail and in person
- Computer literate: adapt to carrier software and internal software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as Outlook

- Ability to interface with Brokers, Carriers and Clients in a professional manner
- Adhere to all PHI (Protected Health Information) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) guidelines
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
• College preferred or equivalent work experience
• Health Insurance knowledge is helpful
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and occasional standing and walking. Must have adequate hearing for phone work. Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Must be able to use a keyboard and other office equipment. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally.
