Summary :
The Crisis Counselor provides mental health support, crisis intervention, and counseling services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. This role requires a compassionate professional with a strong commitment to serving vulnerable populations and addressing complex challenges including trauma, mental health, and substance use issues. The Crisis Counselor must hold a valid LMSW, LPC, or LCSW license in Louisiana and bring expertise in providing evidence-based interventions in high-stress situations.
Location : New Orleans, Louisiana
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Provide crisis counseling and intervention to individuals and families residing in the shelter, addressing immediate mental health needs and de-escalating crises.
- Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments to identify psychological, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to support clients in overcoming challenges and achieving stability.
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based practices tailored to the homeless population's needs.
- Collaborate with shelter staff and community organizations to connect clients with resources for housing, employment, healthcare, and substance use treatment.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and referrals following legal and ethical standards.
- Serve as an advocate for clients, ensuring access to necessary services and support while respecting their autonomy and dignity.
- Provide psychoeducation to clients and shelter staff on topics such as coping skills, stress management, and trauma-informed care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to coordinate care and develop strategies to address client needs.
- Stay informed on best practices in crisis intervention, homelessness, and mental health treatment through ongoing professional development.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field. Must hold a current and valid LMSW, LPC, or LCSW license in the state of Louisiana. Minimum of two years of experience in mental health counseling; experience working with vulnerable populations is highly preferred.
