Summary :
The Shelter Worker supports the daily operations of a homeless shelter, ensuring a safe, clean, and supportive environment for residents. This position focuses on meeting the immediate needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness while fostering a respectful and inclusive atmosphere. The Shelter Worker provides direct assistance, monitors activities, and helps connect residents to resources and services. Prior experience working with homeless populations is preferred, but a passion for helping others is essential.
Location : New Orleans, Louisiana
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Greet and assist residents upon arrival, ensuring they feel welcomed and oriented to the shelter environment.
- Maintain a safe and secure facility by monitoring resident activities and enforcing shelter rules in a fair and respectful manner.
- Provide direct support to residents, addressing their daily needs such as meals, hygiene, and clothing distribution.
- Handle conflicts or crises among residents with professionalism, using de-escalation techniques as needed.
- Document incidents, resident interactions, and services provided in accordance with shelter policies.
- Collaborate with case managers and social workers to ensure residents have access to housing, healthcare, employment, and other resources.
- Perform light housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and organized shelter environment, including common areas, sleeping quarters, and restrooms.
- Offer emotional support and encouragement to residents, helping them feel valued and empowered to work toward stability.
- Assist with program activities, including workshops, life skills training, or support groups, as assigned.
- Support residents in adhering to shelter schedules, curfews, and program requirements.
- Respond to emergencies promptly, following established procedures and notifying supervisors or emergency services when appropriate.
- Participate in team meetings to share updates, discuss challenges, and contribute ideas to enhance shelter services.
- Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certifications in social services or a related field is a plus. Previous experience in a shelter, social service setting, or working with vulnerable populations is preferred.
