Weekly Stipend Rate Is $750.00 Per Week

General Function:
Under the supervision of the Resident Camp Executive Director, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Resident Camp Program Coordinator shall be responsible for the safety, development and training of an individual program area. The Resident Camp Program Coordinator will lead the campers and staff in a safe and respectful manner through approved games, activities and special events while fostering the four core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Resident Camp Program Coordinator will work with all staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members, guests, and staff.

Qualifications:
1. Minimum of 21 years of age.
2. Experience working with campers ages 8–16 in an outdoor setting.
3. At least one-year experience in a related field; Camp Kekoka experience preferred.
4. Minimum of 1-year staff supervisory experience required.
5. Able to help campers as well as parents through issues that commonly occur in a summer camp setting.
6. Ability to be flexible to sudden changes in schedule, staff and campers.
7. Be a strong, positive role model for campers and fellow staff members.
8. Be safety conscious.
9. Ability to multi-task and handle pressure.
10. Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
11. Background must include strong skills in parent relations, staff development, and child development.
12. Certification in Wilderness First Aid/CPR required within 30 days prior to first day of working camp.
13. Certification(s) for specific program area.
14. Medication Administration Training (MAT) Certification required prior to first day of working camp.
15. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
16. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, fingerprinting, sex offender registry check, and Child Protective Services check.

Essential Functions:
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Ensure safety of all staff and participants.
  • Provide accurate rosters for the weekly attendance and transportation of Alexandria campers.
  • Assist the Resident Camp Executive Director in design and implementation of a curriculum that is age appropriate and challenging while encouraging growth and development of the campers. Activities should provide for skill development and program progression.
  • Assist in facilitation and coordination of transportation operations and ensure the overall security of the campers during pick-up and drop-off.
  • Assist in maintaining an orderly arrangement and appearance of Camp Kekoka through attractive and functional equipment, set-up, and decorations.
  • Assist in the purchase, care, maintenance, and storage of program supplies and equipment in accordance with the operating budget with direction from the Resident Camp Executive Director.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow Virginia Standards for Overnight Camps and department standards.
  • Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
  • Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
  • Ensure all guests and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Resident Camp Executive Director for specific program area to assure the overall success of the program and safety of campers and staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all employees and volunteers within the resident camp program under the direct supervision of the Resident Camp Executive Director.
  • Assist with planning, supervising, implementing, and evaluating individual program area.
  • Communicate with parents and address concerns as they arise.

Skills and Ability Requirements:
1. Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers.
2. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.
4. Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning.
5. Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results.
6. Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children.
7. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
8. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities. Ability to respond to emergency situations.
9. Participate in required specific program area trainings; Open Water Lifeguard, Virginia Boating Safety Course, High Ropes Course Supervisor and Wilderness First Aid/CPR.
10. Must be available one week prior to training week, training week and all six weeks of camp.
