What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety and Risk Management Director position at The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas?

General Function:
Under the supervision of the SVP/COO, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Safety and Risk Management Director promotes and advances an overall culture of safety and encourages early detection of potential risks. This position administers risk management and loss prevention programs while ensuring legal compliance. This position leads the Risk Management Cabinet, to address risk management as an Association-wide endeavor that includes not only matters of insurance and physical safety but also of protecting the goodwill necessary to deliver the YMCA mission.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
2. YUSA Multi-Team Leader Certification (or equivalent) required within two years and must begin working towards certification within 6 months.
3. A minimum of three-year’s experience in safety/risk management, recreational programming, or related field is required. Knowledge of YMCA programs preferred.
4. Knowledge of safety/risk related local, state and federal regulations is required.
5. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software.
6. Must possess excellent organizational skills, writing and verbal skills and the ability to manage multiple projects successfully.
7. Must possess human relations skills that maintain a level of credibility and authority in advisory relationships with staff.
8. Prior experience in developing and delivering training.
9. Maintain confidential and sensitive information and materials in a professional and private manner.
10. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire. Must attain American Red Cross instructor certification within 12 months and maintain certification.
11. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
12. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
Essential Functions:
1. Supports the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
2. Promotes a professional values-based culture by leading with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
3. Leads in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
4. Reviews and assesses risk management policies and protocols; makes recommendations and implements modifications and improvements.
5. Conducts risk assessments, collecting and analyzing documentation, statistics, reports, and market trends.
6. Drafts and presents risk reports and proposals to executive leadership and senior staff.
7. Leads the Risk Management Cabinet and holds management staff accountable for execution of risk and safety initiatives, training, and communications.
8. Provides leadership that ensures the Association meets the Y-USA Membership Standards around Child Abuse Prevention and Aquatic Safety.
9. Champions the Association Child Abuse Prevention program utilizing Praesidium’s best practices to maintain accreditation.
10. Champions the annual Five Days of Action program and seeks community involvement to advance child safety.
11. Supports the implementation and audit of the association Aquatics Safety Plan.
12. Receives and reviews incident reports. Manages, investigates, and reports on incidents and acts as liaison with insurance companies and law enforcement.
13. Analyzes incident and injury trends to assist in loss production and determine priorities of work and develop a path to improve the Y’s safety culture.
14. Coordinates and leads safety trainings for the YMCA.
15. Develops and maintains safety training calendar.
16. Administers in-house substance abuse testing program.
17. Assists in managing subpoenas and legal requests.
18. Administers American Red Cross training and recertifications for the Association, including overseeing instructors. Works with HR to track and report on certifications.
19. Works with the Director of HR and assists in tracking training in the HRIS.
20. Manages insurance and DMV records for vehicle fleet.
21. Performs and documents safety audit drills (Code Adam, Code Red, Code Blue, Aquatics) at Centers.
22. Requests and maintains insurance certificates from insurance company as needed.
23. Ensures certificates of insurance are current on all association contracts.
24. Keeps abreast of and ensures compliance with safety legislation and industry practices.
