As an R&D Engineering Technician, you will provide critical hands-on support for building, maintaining, and troubleshooting experimental test setups. You will work closely with engineers to assemble, operate, and repair equipment, following detailed procedures and ensuring everything runs smoothly. This role is ideal for someone with mechanical and chemical aptitude, experience with shop tools, SOPs, HAZOPs, and a proactive mindset.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, modify, and maintain electrochemical test equipment, process piping, and fluid handling systems
- Commission test stations (e.g., leak checks, electrical checks, safety systems), and perform routine maintenance
- Follow build plans, mechanical drawings, and technical instructions for assembly and repair of test equipment and hardware
- Use common shop and industrial tools and machines to install and adjust fixtures, mechanical and process components
- Maintain lab organization and ensure equipment is in good working condition
- Adhere to and improve safety protocols for hazardous chemicals and electrical systems
- Support general technical facility operations, including setup, teardown, and maintenance of R&D test stations
- Perform electrochemical tests following standard operating procedures in collaboration with the engineering team
What they’re looking for
- 3 years of hands-on experience with electro-mechanical assembly, maintenance, or fabrication of fluid handling systems
- Experience working in a lab/shop environment with hazardous chemicals and electrical equipment
- Proficiency using hand, power and common shop tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, drills)
- Ability to read and follow mechanical drawings, schematics, and build plans
- Strong attention to detail to ensure proper fastener torque, leak-free connections, and reliable assembly
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Familiarity with lifting and moving heavy equipment using gantries, forklifts, hoists, or other mechanical assists
- Must be able to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds regularly
- Must be able to crouch, kneel, bend, and climb ladders frequently
- Must be able to use a personal respirator
Extra Credit
- Experience working with electrochemical devices, fuel cells, electrolyzers, or similar equipment
- Experience operating and maintaining forklifts or similar equipment
- Prior experience at a startup or other fast-paced R&D environment
- Basic familiarity with CAD and machining
