About The Job :

Theiagen is a thriving startup at an exciting stage of growth. Having developed organically, we are now seeking a structured approach to scale effectively. Theiagen is looking to add a Controller to our growing team. The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and accounting functions of the organization. This includes maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, preparing financial reports, managing budgets, and leading the accounting function. The Controller plays a critical role in strategic financial planning and decision-making to support the organization's growth and profitability.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are within commuting distance from Philadelphia, PA and are willing to work onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Management :

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring adequate liquidity to meet operational needs.
  • 2. Budgeting and Forecasting :

  • Develop and manage the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Team.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and variance analyses to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend operational improvements.
  • 3. Government Contracts & Procurement Compliance

  • Oversee and manage compliance with federal, state, and local government contract requirements.
  • Maintain an understanding of Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and ensure the company complies with all relevant procurement laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate contract administration, including documentation, tracking, and reporting requirements for government projects.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations.
  • Manage external audits, including preparing necessary documentation and liaising with auditors.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • 4.  Compliance & Risk Management :

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, tax obligations, GAAP standards and government contract stipulations.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for audits, including those related to government contracts and grants.
  • 5. Strategic Contribution :

  • Collaborate with the COO to provide strategic financial insights and support for business planning and decision-making.
  • Develop and track financial KPIs, with specific attention to compliance with government contract terms.
  • Assist in evaluating and managing financial risk, proposing strategies to optimize company resources.
  • 6. Systems & Process Improvement :

  • Oversee and continuously improve accounting systems and financial reporting processes, ensuring scalability to meet both commercial and government requirements.
  • Identify and implement best practices, automation opportunities, and efficiency enhancements.
  • Partner with the COO to ensure robust financial data management and reporting capabilities.
  • Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

    Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
  • Minimum of 6 years  in accounting, with a focus on financial reporting, compliance, and government contracts.
  • Proven experience managing federal, state, and local government procurement, including knowledge of FAR.
  • Proven experience in financial reporting, budgeting, ESOP’s and compliance.
  • Familiarity with public health, consulting accounting practices is a plus.
  • Skills :

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Workday, Intacct) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles),IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards),  tax compliance, and government contract requirements.
  • Experience with ERP implementation or system upgrades.
  • Familiarity with SaaS or cloud-based business models and subscription revenue recognition.
  • Experience in biotech, genomics, health tech, or similar industries.
  • Experience with financial modeling and analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Salary Range : $95,000 to $125,000 / yr
