What are the responsibilities and job description for the Creative Director Copy - Performance Marketing position at TheLab?
Creative Director Copy - Performance Marketing
At thelab, we marry strategy, creative, content, and performance into a single team, powered by robust data analytics. We believe that creative is king—and that exceptional creative quality is as much a performance driver as any other lever. Our offices in NYC, LA, Istanbul and Sydney support partners globally, with a client roster that includes both startups and Fortune 500 companies, such as Tempur-Pedic, KaChava, Frito-Lay, Qdoba, Yamazaki, and Hyundai.
About the role:
As a Creative Director-Performance/Copy at thelab you are a proven leader, copy and content strategist, storyteller, client partner, and persuasive presenter. You lead teams of copywriters, designers, and motion designers across a portfolio of client accounts. You leverage cross-category expertise and performance data to guide clients in what they can, and should, be doing to meet and exceed their business objectives and KPI’s. You can bring ideas to life and collaborate with strategists and other creatives to create and execute concepts that drive business results for our clients. Flexibility, collaboration, and proactivity are keys to success at thelab—we're neither a traditional creative nor performance agency team. We're looking for someone who understands the nuance of every channel and speaks social trends fluently - but also sees beyond tactics and pushes the boundaries of what’s “expected” (and is able to communicate that to clients). You will report into the Executive Creative Director, act as her right hand, and be able to step in to fulfill those functions when necessary.
About you:
- Zero hubris. Plenty of (informed and respectful) opinions.
- An exciting portfolio of work showcasing personal copywriting alongside strategy and your teams’ creative work
- You are a doer, not just a director, easily able to pivot from creating the menu to making the sausage
- You are comfortable with candor, giving and receiving direct feedback with grace and a focus on growth
- A working knowledge of and curiosity about AI tools
- You have a curious, strategic mindset, enjoy problem-solving and challenging the status quo
- An adaptable collaborator with a self-motivated drive to learn
- An inspiring leader who can create a vision and then bring colleagues, teammates, and clients along
- An experienced presenter who can sell ideas and creative strategy to other leaders internally and externally
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- Ability to guide creative from big idea through execution, and iteration, providing clear, actionable feedback along the way.
Your skill set:
- 8 years in digital marketing/advertising copywriting, preferably in an agency setting
- 5 years of paid social activation experience in at least 4 of the following: Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Pinterest, X, YouTube, LinkedIn. Creator and Influencer experience are highly desired.
- 2 years in a senior creative-management role
- Experience managing and developing cross-capability creative talent
- Experience working on D2C brands is helpful
- Performance marketing experience is a must, brand advertising experience is a plus
- Experience with, and understanding of, growth advertising testing approaches and performance metrics across platforms
- Plenty of shoot experience--from script development, pre-pro, and talent direction, to overseeing VO record and final edit.
- You demonstrate mature leadership and empathy in difficult team situations, leading by example, providing solutions, and giving/receiving constructive feedback.
Your day-to-day:
- Provide strategic insight on emerging trends and industry developments as they impact the social media landscape
- Create. Optimize, and iterate ad campaigns across paid social for multiple clients
- Be an expert on our clients’ brands, goals, and competitive landscapes to develop creative campaigns that boost the brand reputation, engagement, and conversion.
- Work with media, strategy, and creative to ensure creative effectiveness and that all ad assets, copy, and content reflect the client's brand guidelines, performance trends, and thelab’s standards of creative excellence
- Guide copywriters and designers in framing idea and storytelling via storyboards, comps, scripts, concept statements, etc.
- Work closely with strategy to develop effective creative briefs that will define key insights and inspire your team to do the best possible work
- Create 1-1 relationships with clients, acting as a trusted creative partner to senior-level marketing leaders
- Balance working across multiple projects and workstreams, and support creative team members in prioritizing their work as needed
