Position Overview 


The Executive Director alongside the board of directors, leads the organization in crafting the strategic initiatives, strives to fulfill the mission as it relates to the organization’s programs, manages the day-to-day activities of the office and staff, and is responsible for marketing and fundraising efforts. The successful candidate feels passionate about Hero's mission, is outgoing and customer-oriented, and can work independently and with careful attention to detail. This full-time position also requires flexibility, with some work on evenings and weekends. There Goes My Hero (TGMH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the Baltimore area. Its mission is to: Save lives. Provide hope. Help those impacted by blood cancer. Its primary mission is to organize and manage bone marrow registry drives to increase the number of registered donors with the goal of finding a match for every patient searching for a donor. Secondarily, TGMH supports local blood cancer patients and their families during treatment.  


Duties  


The core duties of the Executive Director position centers around fulfilling certain strategic initiatives, managing the administrative and day-to-day operations of the organization, and spearheading certain fundraising and marketing goals. 


Strategic Initiatives  


  • Responsible for implementing and managing of the daily operations of TGMH to include bone marrow drive recruitment and staffing, on-going relationship with DKMS, Johns Hopkins Medical Institution, Hackerman - Patz Patient and Family Pavilion and University of Maryland Medical Center. 
  • Recommends and participates in the formulation and execution of policies.  
  • Maintains effective internal and external relationships through management, leadership, and communication to achieve economical, productive performance, forward-looking programming and constructive growth. 
  • Work with the Board to lay out a vision for the next 1-3 years.  
  • Give direction and leadership to the formulation and achievement of the organization's philosophy, mission, and vision.  
  • Prepare a sustainability plan, including a marketing plan, and facilitate, in consultation with the Board, the adoption of the plan's implementation.  
  • Implement decisions of the Board, not delegated to a committee or volunteers. 


Marketing and Fundraising  


  • Manage all fundraising aspects of the organization and explore and create strategic partnerships; corporate and community based.  
  • Prepare grant proposals to fund specific TGMH activities or programs directed by the Board.  
  • Manage all partnership opportunities.  
  • Assist staff in third party events.  
  • Work with all committees to coordinate bone marrow drive opportunities.  
  • Establish policies and procedures for ensuring effective communication with donors including acknowledgement of donations, sponsorship of events, recognition, etc. 
  • Work with the Marketing Committee to plan and execute communications to the general membership that includes an annual report, newsletters, general mailings, news releases, and so forth.  
  • Leverage the volunteer program to create new opportunities for fundraising. 
  • Continue to develop and active volunteer program.  
  • Continue to develop and grow our social media activities to create new opportunities for fundraising and volunteers.  


Administration & Management 


  • Prepare and following the approval of the Board, administer the annual budget, coordinate with the Finance Committee and the Treasurer.  
  • Administer funds under the direction of the Chairman, President and Treasurer in accordance with TGMH fiscal policies.  
  • Support scheduling of the entire organization (i.e. board meetings and committee meetings) and employee day/times hours to be worked.  
  • Serve as staff liaison to committees and Board.  
  • Coordinate and oversee other professional advisors including attorneys, investment managers, insurance providers, accountants, and project partners.  
  • Organize and manage all other administrative functions as they relate to the organization to include compliance work. (990, 403b, etc.)  
  • Provide management and oversight of TGMH's employees and volunteers.  
  • Ensure that the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and officers are kept fully informed of the conditions and operations of TGMH and of all important factors influencing them.  
  • Attend all meetings of the Board and Executive Committee.  
  • Develop and administer, for daily operations, specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement the general policies established by the Board of Directors. 
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff as authorized by the Board. Directs and coordinate staff. 


Skills  


  • Excellent verbal and written skills required. Ability to speak to large groups of people and individuals and write clearly for different audiences.  
  • Highly organized and excellent attention to detail in all work.  
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work as needed; use time effectively. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.  
  • Ability to lead a team and work with volunteers. 
  • Professional: treats others with respect and consideration, accepts responsibility for actions and follows through on commitments.  
  • Sense of humor is necessary.  


Qualifications  


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. 
  • 5 years progressive work experience in fundraising. 
  • 8 - 10 years non-profit experience or equivalent. 
  • Experience as an Executive Director a plus.
