ALLARM Director Overview :

The ALLARM director is responsible for leadership of all ALLARM activities including overseeing the operation, raising funds for ALLARM’s $400K annual budget, developing and implementing organizational workflow, supervising and mentoring staff, engaging ALLARM students in substantive projects, and maintaining ALLARM’s leadership role in community science in the region and the field.

The Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) is an aquatic community science center at Dickinson College. Since its founding in 1986, ALLARM has become a nationally recognized technical and programmatic support center for community organizations interested in watershed assessment, protection, and restoration. Through the work of four full-time professional staff, 10-16 Dickinson College part-time students, and a part-time science advisor, ALLARM has carried out its mission to empower Pennsylvania and New York communities with scientific tools to assess stream health and help communities use those data to implement stream restoration and protection measures. www.dickinson.edu / allarm

Job Summary / Basic Function

The Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) is an aquatic community science center at Dickinson College. Since its founding in 1986, ALLARM has become a nationally recognized technical and programmatic support center for community organizations interested in watershed assessment, protection, and restoration. Through the work of four full-time professional staff, two part-time staff, and 10-16 Dickinson College part-time students, ALLARM has carried out its mission to empower Pennsylvania and New York communities with scientific tools to assess stream health and help communities use those data to implement stream restoration and protection measures.

The ALLARM director is responsible for leadership of all Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) activities including overseeing the operation, program development and implementation, engaging ALLARM students in substantive projects, and maintaining ALLARM’s leadership role in community science on statewide, regional, national, and international levels. A crucial element of the director’s position is program visioning, strategic planning, and successful grant writing to raise funds for ALLARM’s $400K annual budget since 70% of the organization is funded externally.

Essential Functions :

  • Maintains organizational vision and in collaboration with full-time Employees (FTE), defines ALLARM’s annual scope of work while identifying and prioritizing areas for development.
  • Raises $400,000 in external funds annually (grants and donor). Maintains organization finances, writes grant proposals and reports, and cultivates relationships with existing and possible funders.
  • Supervises full and part-time professional staff. Ensures that they are engaging in exciting projects that are aligned with ALLARM’s strategy, leveraging their strengths and interests, and maximizing their learning opportunities in the organization.
  • Supervises ALLARM student staff (watershed coordinators). Develops student work plans that facilitate opportunities to engage in community-based work, build their professional skill sets to be effective leaders in the field, and apply classroom-learned lessons to support PA and NY communities.
  • Works collaboratively with the ALLARM team to develop and implement technical and scientific water quality monitoring resources to support volunteer and community scientists in PA and NY. Creates and co-creates educational resources, workshops, monitoring methods manuals, quality assurance project plans, and educational resources. Oversees a stateside quality assurance / quality control lab for volunteer scientists.
  • Identifies opportunities for new partnerships with community organizations as well as statewide, regional, national, and international networks. Manages community-based water quality monitoring efforts on statewide, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Develops and implements resources to maximize ALLARM’s operational ability, including budgets, organizational and individual work plans, and assessment.
  • Fosters collaborations with faculty and administration in and out of classroom. Publicizes work to faculty audiences including opportunities for curriculum enhancement and faculty involvement. Serves on pertinent campus committees.

Bachelor’s Degree – Environmental science or related field

Master’s Degree preferred – Aquatic science or environmental science

Experience can substitute for a master's degree in organization or business management.
