JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for providing a safe and pleasant patient experience while performing proper sterile technique during specimen acquisition. Utilizes Electronic Health Records (EHR) to maintain accurate electronic records.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Greet and educate the patient on the procedure.
2. Identify patient and test, generate and confirm correct labels and affixes on specimen container according to laboratory policies.
3. Assemble needed equipment (tourniquet, alcohol wipes, needle, vacutainer tubes, etc.) in preparation for procedure. Select veni-puncture equipment appropriate for test order, properly cleaning site with antiseptic prior to obtaining sample.
4. Draw blood specimen, document and prepare specimen for transport to the lab according to lab process and always adhering to universal precautions.
5. Monitor patients reaction to the procedure and takes appropriate measures to calm anxiety or fear
6. Once sample is obtained, properly treat puncture site and dispose of all sharps, dirty equipment, and personal protective equipment properly.
7. In EHR, monitor daisy chain and accurately check patients in and out of the system, releases patient orders to be sent to LIS system. In LIS, validate orders and release labels for specimens and documents PT/INR result in EHR when appropriate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and equipment, accessioning, verifying specimens and specimen requirements
2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
3. Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules.
4. Skill in communicating in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing.
5. Skill in planning, organizing, and time management.
6. Skill in using a computer and a variety of software, including Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
7. Skill in managing multiple priorities and problem solving.
8. Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet established goals and objectives.
9. Ability to maintain high levels of professional and personal integrity.
10. Ability to convey professional demeanor and sound judgment in dealing with patients care, protection of patient privacy, and confidentiality.
11. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
12. Ability to act as a good representative of the company.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Highschool diploma or GED required. American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required. A minimum of two (2) year of experience in phlebotomy, utilizing electronic Health Records (EHR) required.
