The Guidance Counselor plays a pivotal role in fostering the holistic well-being and development of our students. This position encompasses responsibilities in child safeguarding, emotional counseling, and the facilitation of key programs such as InsideOut and THINK Beyond, which focus on advisory and future pathways planning.

 

As TGS embraces restorative practices, the Counselor will lead and facilitate training that promotes healthier approaches to community building and behavior management. They collaborate closely with the school’s leadership team to address student well-being, behavior concerns, and progress, ensuring that our support structures, such as Advisory, operate effectively and align with safeguarding measures.

 

The Counselor also oversees provisions for students with specific educational needs, identifying and monitoring these needs while implementing tailored support plans. They provide training and guidance to educators on inclusive practices to create an environment where all students thrive.

 

In addition, the Counselor supports students in planning their academic and career pathways, including guidance on course selection, standardized testing, and global university application processes. Working in partnership with the offsite international college counselor, they assist students in identifying post-school opportunities that align with their goals, interests, and strengths.

 

The Counselor provides direct social and emotional support through group sessions, short-term individual counseling, and classroom interventions on topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, and building positive relationships. These efforts aim to address social and emotional barriers to learning and equip students with essential coping skills to succeed academically and socially.

 

The role also requires flexibility, with availability during break periods as needed, ensuring consistent support for the TGS community.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • The well-being and safeguarding of students. Oversight of the various support and monitoring systems and structures that are in place to ensure that our students are safe and supported. 
  • Ensuring that information about student well being collected, recorded and timeously responded to. 
  • Together with the Principal act as the safeguarding officer of the school. This includes facilitating safeguarding, in particular restorative practices, training for educators and all staff who come into contact with students. 
  • Directly responsible for the career counselling and the university or college application process for the students. 
  • Creation and management of student success plans and support strategies. Guiding and training educators to implement these strategies effectively.  Develop and execute staff workshops relevant to learning support strategies, called student success plans, social emotional learning and college application processes. 
  • Meet with students for counseling sessions, properly document and store confidential information. 
  • Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators as required.
  • Collaborate  with the school’s leadership team when issues with student well-being or behaviour management are being addressed. 
  • Enforce and follow all administrative policies and rules governing students enrolled in the TGS Program.
  • Promote the TGS Program through various means in accordance with and pursuant to the policies and procedures applicable to the TGS Faculty as they may be implemented or amended from time to time (e.g. speaking engagements, blogging regarding TGS Program activities).
  • Facilitate college entrance exams and university applications.
  • Attend professional conferences, orientations, in-service training, and staff meetings as required.
  • Work with the marketing team to assist in the development to better inform university admission officers about TGS.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Inside Out/THINKBeyond TGS 

  • Responsible for the implementation of  Inside Out, TGS’ social emotional program and the THINK Beyond Post-TGS preparation course. 

 

TGS Student Responsibilities of Employee:

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of the students assigned.
  • Travel and live internationally with the TGS students enrolled in the  program during the Employment Term and when the program is in session.
  • On duty responsibilities.

 

Requirements:

  • 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in an educational setting.
  • A sound understanding and experience with safeguarding in an international school context.
  • A sound understanding and experience with the provision of learning support to students and leading educator training workshops to empower educators to implement the student success plans. 
  • Strong familiarity with the college admissions process, gap year programs and/or programs beyond high school. 
  • Proper educational licensing credentials within the home country to teach at the secondary and/or college levels as a School Guidance Counselor.
  • Integrity, a strong sense of reality, honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Interpersonal understanding and cultural sensitivity.
  • Excellent Communication and Presentation Skills.
  • Innovative thinking.
  • Ability to effectively interact with, guide, teach, challenge and mentor high-school students.

  • Collaborative, team member.
