VP of Intellectual Property
A Stealth Mode Third Rock Ventures Start Up is looking for a Patent Attorney to join our growing organization. This talented individual will Strategically manage intellectual property portfolio for several programs, to maximize value and utility of assets, and work closely with R&D, to identify key invention, strategic IP acquisition, and life cycle management opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Manage and corresponding budget for worldwide prosecution of patent and trademark applications, conduct patentability and freedom to operate assessments and other legal opinions and risk assessments.
- Develop a thorough understanding of current and planned business activities, programs, competitors, and markets and keep up-to-date on developing legal trends, laws and regulations.
- Lead IP strategy for R&D project teams and establish positive working relationships with the R&D project teams by acting as their advisor on a variety of IP related issues.
- Actively mine for patentable inventions by partnering with the scientists to build a robust portfolio.
- Contribute to, and maintain positive relationships with, strategic external relationship counterparts.
- Support IP disputes, litigation, IPRs, PGRs and oppositions as appropriate.
- Provide high level, independent support for due diligence, strategic collaborations, licensing agreements and other business contracting needs.
- Educate and advise senior management & scientists on important IP issues and advance IP/patent awareness.
- Actively support implementation of best practices to expand and support defense of a robust IP
- Review publications, presentations, press releases and other materials for clearance.
Requirements
- US attorney (JD) with at least 10-15 years of relevant IP experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, including significant firm and in-house experience.
- Ph.D. in Immunology or related field preferred
- Exceptionally strong communicator, supportive interpersonal team player, talented at collaborating cross- functionally to communicate complex information to senior management.
- Ability to work in dynamic, fast-paced team environment, flexible and responsive and self-starter with the ability to act independently as well as collaboratively across the business.
- Direct experience in biologic patents and managing products through development, marketing approval and post-approval preferred.
- Must be comfortable participating in all aspects of intellectual property law including drafting applications, prosecuting applications, and portfolio management to meet budget.
- Practical problem solver with ability to make data informed decisions, confidence in making difficult decisions independently, and demonstrated capabilities in establishing business practices to manage legal and other risks.
