Thomas J. O’Connor is hiring a shelter veterinarian looking to make a difference in the lives of people and animals in the Springfield area. As a municipal animal control facility serving approximately 4,000 animals per year, our workplace is dynamic and exciting. Every day is different and our shelter veterinarian is a valued member of a team working to physically and mentally enrich the lives of the animals in our care and in our communities.
Our vet team includes a clinic coordinator and veterinary technician. The team has access to a state of the art digital radiograph machine, ultrasound, an on-site surgery suite, an oxygen chamber, incubators, and a dental machine.
Additionally, the shelter vet team has support from the Foundation for TJO Animals. Their financial support allows access to extraordinary medical care and enables us to help extremely medically needy animals. Strong partnerships with the MSPCA, Dakin, Second Chance, and other rescue groups enable us to help as many animals as possible.

Responsibilities include:
Spay/Neuter of shelter pets
Surgical procedures including but not limited to: amputations, enucleations, cystotomy, wound repair, extractions
Oversight and execution of medical protocols and licenses
Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning
Collection of forensic evidence, including necropsies
