Museum Shop Team Leader (Part-Time)
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring
history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas, and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site and a Site of Conscience.
The purpose of this job is to provide administrative; sales floor support for the Museum Shop in the Visitor Center. This position may also function as an opener/closer for the shop.
Essential Functions
Delivers superior customer service to guest
Supervises sales floor and associates
Assists with visual displays and merchandising
Cash management of Museum Shop
Prepare daily register banks
Daily reconciliation of cash drawers
Occasional deposit preparation and submittal.
Pull merchandise requested by the online shop or catalog
Prepare and ship to the Distribution Center.
Opens and closes the shop in the absence of the Manager of Museum Shops.
During busy times this position may need to run a register or assist in restocking the sales floor.
Follow all internal control policies, practices and procedures.
Create a customer friendly environment for all visitors, guests and internal customers.
Assist with other administrative duties as requested by the Manager of Museum Shops.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel.
Knowledge of arithmetic and basic accounting principles.
Skills, experience, and knowledge in cash handling, deposits, internal control practices.
Understanding of marketing principles and informational signage techniques.
Knowledge of Museum Shop Merchandise. • Knowledge of Thomas Jefferson and Monticello, including other guest operations.
Knowledge of basic phone etiquette and customer service techniques.
Computer skills such as the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets.
Ability to operate our POS system.
Ability to follow instructions (oral and written).
Ability to problem solve.
Ability to maintain focus on complex projects in a highly disruptive environment
Physical Demands and Work Considerations
This position is located in the Visitor Center Shop. The shop can become noisy and the person in this position must be able to maintain focus and maintain accuracy in this environment.
Monticello is located on a mountaintop and walking on steep and uneven ground is necessary.
Monticello is open weekends and most holidays.
Non-traditional shifts such as early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, or split shifts may be required based on staffing and forecasted sales.
Ability to work all signature major events including Fourth of July.
Standing at the registers or being on the sales floor for long periods of time is required.
Must adhere to all Foundation policies, including dress code requirements. IV.
Education • High School Education • Two-year retail, front line customer service or marketing experience preferred
