The Charge Nurse has an overall responsibility for resident care in the facility. All of the following duties are essential unless otherwise noted:

  • Evaluation of resident needs, conditions, and care, and assist in developing nursing care plans for individuals residents, including rehabilitative and restorative activities and instruction in self-help.
  • Communication with family members regarding the condition and progress of the resident, including in-person discussion and answering of telephone inquiries.
  • Assisting the physicians in rounds, reviewing physicians’ orders, ordering medications, maintenance of the residents’ medical records, and transcription of physician orders.
  • Requisition of the necessary supplies, equipment, linens, emergency drugs, and other materials to meet the residents’ needs. This also requires that the Charge Nurse be responsible for making sure the equipment is in good working order.
  • Maintains unit records, including charting duties and maintenance of narcotic records.
  • Responsible for the administration of all resident medications and treatments as ordered by the physician on a regular and prn basis and for assessment of any potential or actual side effects.
  • Arranging the schedules, appointments, and transportation necessary for residents in connection with diagnostic, therapeutic, dental, or medical services.
  • Responsible for the admission, discharge, or transfer of residents.
  • Responsible for the work assignments of the certified nursing assistants and other nursing staff members with the authority to make changes and revise duties in order to meet resident needs. Is responsible to ensure that staff members complete assigned duties.
  • Responsible for the authorization of overtime, disciplining of subordinate nursing employees, and for recommendation of termination if needed. Responsible for assisting with the performance evaluations of all staff supervised. Where necessary, the Charge Nurse is to provide counseling to employees on performance improvement.
  • Assist with the orientation of all new nursing employees.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing with the implementation of policies and procedures for the facility.
  • Make daily round to evaluate the emotional and physical needs of residents during the tour of duty.
  • Ability to reasonably conform to all rules and policies of the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:

Lifting Requirements:

The Charge Nurse will constantly be called upon to lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, nurses will be required to assist with lifting residents requiring lifting over 50 pounds. Assistive equipment is available for resident lifts.

Carrying Requirements:

The Charge Nurse will be frequently be called upon to carry objects including charts and equipment up to 20 pounds. May be called upon to carry equipment up to 30 pounds. Carrying equipment in excess of 30 pounds is not generally required.

Sight Requirements:

The Charge Nurse is required to have vision corrected to average to assess and respond to resident needs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Hearing Requirements:

The Restorative Nurse is required to have normal grange of hearing, as corrected and in order to respond to resident/staff/physician/family communication.

Socialization Requirements:

The Restorative Nurse is required to work with all other persons in the facility and the ability to get along and socialize with others including residents and families is essential. Excellent communication and socialization skills are required. In addition, the Charge Nurse is responsible for hands on resident care requiring an ability to meet and deal with the residents and their families.

Other Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the Restorative Nurse Assistant is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Will be called upon to frequently perform twisting, bending, squatting, kneeling or crouching when assisting with resident therapy needs. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Charge Nurses must be able to be mobile in all residents areas.

  • Exposure to general resident care environment.
  • Exposure to moderate temperature variations.
  • Exposure to pharmacological preparations, biologicals, and potential biohazard materials including blood and other bodily fluids and medical sharp objects.
  • Frequent work interruptions occur.
  • Extended hours may be required including overtime and extra shifts.
  • Moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to moving equipment and machinery.
  • Exposure to chemicals including cleaning and disinfecting solutions, etc.
  • Exposure to stressful situations such as distressed or angry residents and family members.
  • May be exposed to violent behavior by residents.
  • Must work well independently and as a team member.
