Substation Relay Technician

Overview

The Substation Relay Technician plays a crucial role in the efficient and safe operation of electrical substations. They are responsible for the maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of protective relays and substation equipment to ensure reliable electricity transmission and distribution.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, and maintain protective relays and substation equipment.
• Perform relay calibration and functional testing.
• Identify and resolve issues related to relay operations and substation components.
• Implement and adhere to safety procedures and protocols.
• Collaborate with engineering teams for relay settings and coordination studies.
• Develop and maintain detailed records of relay tests and maintenance activities.
• Provide technical support for substation operations and maintenance personnel.
• Participate in equipment commissioning and decommissioning activities.
• Conduct root cause analysis for relay and equipment failures.
• Keep abreast of industry standards and best practices for relay maintenance.
• Assist in the planning and execution of substation projects.
• Troubleshoot and repair relay communication and control systems.
• Coordinate with vendors for procurement of relay testing equipment and spare parts.
• Conduct training for substation personnel on relay testing and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Proven experience in relay testing and maintenance within a substation environment.
• Familiarity with relay test sets, oscilloscopes, and related testing equipment.
• Knowledge of protective relay schemes and their applications.
• Understanding of substation equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, and switchgear.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosing relay and substation equipment issues.
• Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to substation operations.
• Strong understanding of electrical safety procedures and protocols.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations and respond to emergencies.
• Certification in relay testing and maintenance is a plus.
• Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software is desirable.
• Physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy equipment within a substation environment.
