Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers all medications.
  • Administers first aid as needed, oversees general health needs.
  • Prepares plans for emergencies.
  • Conducts screenings for lice and counsels students and parents on treatment of lice.
  • Administers or assists with any treatment needed by students; catheterizations, suctioning, tube feedings, nebulizers.
  • Checks blood pressures and temperatures of staff and students as needed.
  • Conducts other screenings as needed.
  • Make referrals to school counselors as needed.
  • Maintains infection control procedures
  • Screens students checking out due to illness or injury.
  • Maintains health records and immunization compliance.
  • Maintains secure storage of all medications.
  • Maintains accurate log of medication given daily.
  • Maintains accurate log of students seen and treatments rendered daily.
  • Obtains and keeps records of parental consent to administer medication.
  • Calls parents as needed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies used in the clinic.
  • Fills out accident reports.
  • Maintains clean environment in the clinic.
  • Reports to principal any medical situations that might affect the student body, such as lice.
  • Maintains files with emergency contact numbers for each student
  • Sends home current information concerning students such as lice outbreaks, strep throat, mononucleosis, etc.
  • Provides in-services to staff as requested.
  • Keeps teacher informed on medical problems relating to students in their class.
  • Maintains current CPR and First Aid training
  • Reads current nursing and medical journals.
  • Reviews guidelines for school nurses
  • Attends in-service meetings for nurses
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with appropriate governmental agencies.
  • Communicates effectively with the public, staff members, students, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
  • Create and maintain records, files, reports, or schedules as may be required by area of assignment.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with any sensitive material or information.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and the ability to adapt to an extended/flexible work schedule.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Review current development, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies and administrative directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Hold or be eligible for required certification. LPN/RN/Medical Assistant Certification
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
  • Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students particularly during emergency situations.
