Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Organizes and administers the instrumental program within the school.
- Is responsible for all aspects of the instrumental music program to include but not limited to the marching band, concert bands, jazz band, and other musical organizations as may be designated
- Is responsible for all band extracurricular activities, including but not limited to football games, parades, community activities, marching band festivals and competitions.
- Follows and informs all assistant directors of all applicable rules, regulations, and policies from both the state and local sources to assure compliance
- Provides direction and a course of action for the improvement of the middle school band, which serves as the feeder program for the high school band.
- Maintains lesson plans and uses relevant data to plan for instruction to meet the needs of all students
- Uses research based instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students
- Encourages student growth, development, and recognition by providing the formal training, encouragement, and opportunities for their participation in GMEA District Honors Band, GMEA All-State Band, GMEA Jazz Band, scholarship events, scholarship auditions, etc.
- Assesses, documents, and prepares reports such as achievement progress, grade and classroom performance and attendance
- Provides a well-managed, safe and orderly environment that encourages respect for all
- Participates in student related conferences
- Works cooperatively Band Booster Club to assure support for the enhancement of the entire band program
- Prepares, organizes, and schedules concerts and/or other musical performances as needed
- Monitors the band budget and band inventory to ensure that program funds and assets are managed in accordance with school system policies and procedures.
- Accompanies and is responsible for all band performances; assumes responsibility for arranging transportation to and from events and performances
- Assumes responsibility for the care, maintenance, and storage for all uniforms and instrument/equipment inventory
- Serves as a positive and active team member within the high school and district Fine Arts Department, where collaboration and support for one another is essential to the success of all fine arts programs
- Maintains active membership in professional organizations, specifically GA Music Educators Association (GMEA)
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Hold or be eligible for required certification. Master's Degree preferred
- Experience as a band director preferred
- Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
- High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
- Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
- Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
- Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
- Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
- Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students particularly during emergency situations.
