TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION WRITER

Summary: Prepare instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information more easily. Develop, gather, and disseminate technical information through Thompson Pump’s communications channels. Responsible for generating innovative ideas for content while working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. The position researches products, services, technology or concepts to be documented and easily understood by a broad audience

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive documentation strategy to ensure that documentation adheres to industry standards, regulatory requirements, and is aligned with company goals and industry standards.
  • Define documentation processes, workflows, and tools to streamline content creation and maintenance.
  • Independently make decisions regarding which rules, processes, materials, or tools to use to effectively accomplish work assignments and develop ways to improve existing work processes. 
  • Take an active role in interpreting and finding solutions for customer requests that are occasionally unclear, incomplete, or complicated.
  • Organize and maintain a centralized document repository to facilitate easy access to relevant technical information.
  • Implement quality control processes to identify and rectify errors in documentation.
  • Oversee the creation of style guidelines and various technical documents, including user manuals, product specifications, assembly manuals, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Ensure documentation is clear, concise, and tailored to the needs of different audiences.
  • Implement quality assurance processes to review and edit documentation for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to verify technical details and ensure the highest quality of documentation.
  • Establish version control processes for documentation updates and maintain an organized repository of all documentation assets.
  • Monitor industry trends and updates to keep documentation current and relevant.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, and customer support, to gather information and insights for documentation as well as incorporate documentation into third-party online parts ordering software system (Smart Equip).
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Engineering, Technical Communication, Technical Writing) or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven experience as a technical writer in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing or engineering environment, technical concepts and the ability to translate complex information into clear, user-friendly documentation.
  • Proficiency in documentation tools and technologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices in technical documentation.
  • Experience with document management systems.
  • Familiarity with graphics and multimedia tools for enhancing documentation visuals.
  • Project management skills for coordinating documentation projects and deadlines.
