The Role:
The Thompson Rivers Parks and Recreation District operates the Milliken Water Works Pool, an outdoor seasonal pool located in Milliken. The pool is typically open annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
As a member of the Aquatics team, this position is responsible for the overall safety and well-being of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies; while ensuring the facility is clean and properly maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, general maintenance, cleaning and inspection of equipment in the aquatics area of the Milliken Water Works Pool. Dive in and join the TRPR Aquatics Team!
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
- Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.
- Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
- Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.
- Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
- Supervises and assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment, assists with chlorine residual water tests and with records and charts of water tests and records of accidents, and adds chemicals to pool water as directed.
- Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- American Red Cross CPR/ First Aid/ AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification
- Certified Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate
- Must become certified American Red Cross CPR/ First Aid/ AED for the Professional Rescuer and Red Cross Lifeguard Training before the pool season.
- Must be 15 years of age or older.
- Ability to swim 300 yards and pass the brick test.
- WSI Certification preferred.
- Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities.
- Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff.
- Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.
- Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
- Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.

Working conditions and physical requirements:
Work will be outdoor and will include all exposure to all types of weather conditions, including exposure to the sun. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to chemicals and fumes.
This position requires a high level of physical ability including standing for long periods, bending, reaching, lifting, jumping, walking, stretching, etc. This position will work closely with customers of varying abilities and must be comfortable acknowledging those different abilities and aptitudes.
Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body).
