What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manufacturing Engineer position at Thorlabs?
Purpose of the Position
The manufacturing engineer would work closely with but independently from the manufacturing floor to ensure that all aspects of the assembly process are being continually improved in order to deliver better value to our customers. Processes will support the manufacturing of specials, OEM, and our standard ecommerce products. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Support and improve assembly procedures, equipment, and processes
- Improve assembly instructions, tools, and jigs for legacy products
- Define and implement COGS reduction efforts
- Update drawings and designs to improve manufacturability
- Facilitate the addition of newly designed products into the assembly department
- Implement and support in-process automation to improve the assembly process
- Solve and improve packaging
- Support and train assembly during new product introductions
- Support the additional demand from specials and OEM business

Qualifications
Experience:
- 1-3 years of experience in manufacturing engineering or relevant field.
Education:
- B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge on SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
- Knowledge of ISO and ASTM standards and documentation
- Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
- Strong sense of ownership and work ethic
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
- Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
- Proficiency in basic computer use (MS Office) and communication skills
