What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Instructional Assistant position at Thorpe Elementary?
Instructional Assistant(s)
- The Shared Aide position is a school year position with optional summer opportunities.
- Shared Aides work with multiple students, typically in a single classroom or grade, as required by students’ individual educational plans (IEPs) or 504-accommodation plans (504s).
- Shared Aides may work with students in grades K-5 6-8, or 9-12 post secondary (ages 18 – 22).
- Shared Aides support students in and out of the general education environment.
Job Description
- Primarily provides support to small groups of students in a single grade or classroom (elementary) or in a single program (elementary or secondary)
- Provides general support for the classroom teacher(s)
- Works with individuals, in a small group setting, or in a classroom to facilitate learning following the classroom or special education teachers instructions
- When working in small groups or classrooms, supports the academic & social-emotional needs of both typical and special education students, when applicable.
General
- Maintain student confidentiality
- Support students during class time, during specialist subjects such as music, physical education, library, and/or technology, as needed.
- Performs duties such as, but not limited to, arrival/dismal, breakfast/lunch, and recess times
- Secure car seats and/or wheelchairs or other such devices into transportation vehicles, as necessary
- Provide classroom coverage when needed
- Hours as per contract Article 6; section 6-01 and at the discretion of the principal and superintendent
- Carry out other assignments designated by the Principal
- Provide academic support based on classroom assignments and curriculum based upon accommodations outlined in the student’s IEP or 504, including: Pre-teaching and re-teaching
- Supporting student organization and/or independence
- Implementing behavioral/social support within the classroom, including attention, non-compliance, task completion, wandering, following rules and classroom expectations, facilitating positive experiences with peers, etc.
- Reinforcing instructional practices developed by related service providers, i.e.Speech therapist, OT, PT, psychologist, etc.
- Assist with standardized testing based upon accommodations
- Assist with implementation of social emotional learning expectations
Clerical
- Develop materials based on specific instruction from the classroom teacher and/or Special Education teacher
- Complete data collection related to academic functioning and/or student social performance that supports instruction
- Share relevant information about learners with teachers and other school personnel as needed to facilitate problem solving, decision making, and program planning
- Participate in team level meetings, consultations, and/or professional development as required.
- Assist in the development of portfolios for MCAS when appropriate
