The salary range for this position is $6,093.00 - $7,548.00 monthly.

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for an Operations Crew Chief - Traffic to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Traffic Operations team. The successful candidate will lead a traffic operations crew whose responsibilities include maintenance and operations of Thurston County's traffic control devices and support the many functions of the Office of the County Engineer.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Under the direction of the Traffic Operations Supervisor, oversees and monitors the County's 1,000 miles of roadways, ensuring they are properly signed and marked. This includes approximately 20,000 traffic signs, 1,200 paint line miles, 500 streetlights and over 100 traffic warning beacons.
  • Prepares estimates of equipment and labor needed for all maintenance and construction projects.
  • Maintains accurate inventories of parts and equipment and provides input for purchasing decisions.
  • Works closely with the engineers to help coordinate between engineering staff and field operations.
  • Maintains work records including timecards, work completed and accident reports.
  • Leads, plans, directs and organizes crew workloads and assignments, reviews progress, directs changes in priorities and schedules as needed to assure work is performed in a timely and efficient manner according to appropriate guidelines, procedures and legal regulations.


Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Environment – Split between sitting at a desk in an office and field work/review.
  • Schedule – Varies by time of year.
  • Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings.
  • Customer Interactions - Daily interactions via phone, in-person, and video with Thurston County staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of journey level experience in road maintenance, construction, or traffic control maintenance and one year of supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and assume responsibility for the work situation.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State CDL Class A Driver's License with air brake. A valid First Aid Card; and possess valid Washington Traffic Flagging Card or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Traffic Control Supervisory Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer with applicable software.
  • Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association Certification (IMSA) Level Signs and Markings I within 6 months of hire.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Proficient at using computers and associated software to develop work priorities, schedules, estimates, and documenting work.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing with subordinate employees, other County employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to asset management.
  • Knowledge and experiences installing and maintaining traffic control devices and applying the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
