The Deputy Chief Auditor is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership and management for the organization's Internal Audit Services department. This job provides input to policy and strategies within the Internal Audit function and oversees and approves departmental business plans and ensures implementation. The Deputy Chief Auditor challenges management to adopt appropriate policies and procedures and effective controls to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity of the Internal Audit department. This job is also responsible for managing thematic macro control issues as part of its risk-assessment processes and determining the overall impact of such issues on the institution's risk profile. Key Responsibilities and Duties Directly manages one of more of the organization’s Audit Committee relationships on behalf of the Chief Auditor. Interacts with leaders across the enterprise for the purpose of influencing and coordinating program level actions, determinations, policies, procedures and strategic direction. Provides strategic direction, leadership and management of significant components of the Internal Audit Services function. Makes decisions on complex issues dealing with risk assessment, regulatory compliance and controls issues having high impact to the organization Evaluates the adequacy and operating effectiveness of the internal controls and the quality of ongoing operations within the company. Evaluates the business operations and develops relevant, cost saving, control and process improvement ideas to assist the organization in meeting its goals. Manages and provides direction to a team of direct and indirect employees, while driving strategic initiatives for the Internal Audit function. Manages budget of the Internal Audit program, in partnership with the Chief Auditor and peers, and oversees resource and consulting expenses in line with budgets and business expectations. Builds a reputation as a trusted and valued partner to the Executive Committee and Executive Leadership Team.Educational Requirements University (Degree) PreferredWork Experience 10 Years RequiredPhysical Requirements Physical Requirements: Sedentary Work Career Level 13PL The Deputy Chief Auditor for Client Relationships (CR), COO, Product, Client Services (CS) and TIAA India is a key member of the TIAA Internal Audits Services (IAS) leadership team and is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership, and management for TIAA's Internal Audit Services team, specifically leading the audit program for CR, COO, Product and CS while also managing the IAS team in India. These business units drive TIAA’s long-term strategy and generate much of the revenue for the firm. Collectively these company business areas represent more than 30 businesses which operate collectively to provide products and services across TIAA’s more than 4 million customers. The Deputy Chief Auditor leads a team of more than 40 experienced professionals located across several of Internal Audit’s key locations: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Jacksonville, London, Mumbai, and New York. Serves as the senior Audit Executive with full ownership and responsibility for providing internal audit support for the revenue-generating organizations and business-related risks. Responsible for independently evaluating the adequacy and operating effectiveness of the internal controls and the quality of ongoing operations within the Company. As a member of the Internal Audit Senior Leadership Team, develops and implements strategic and operational plans related to the implementation of the Internal Audit function's overall goals and objectives The Deputy Chief Auditor will partner closely with the TIAA Chief Auditor to shape the IAS strategy and audit plan. This executive will create industry-leading standards of excellence, instill a culture of innovation, and add value to the enterprise. The Deputy Chief Auditor is considered as a successor candidate to the TIAA Chief Auditor. Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field; MBA preferred. 15 years of experience in public accounting and/or diversified financial services. Must have experience in an internal audit leadership role (or a related field) within a leading, performance-oriented diversified financial services company. Minimum of 10 years of managerial experience required. Experience in a regulated financial services environment, requiring direct interactions with regulators such as the Federal Reserve, OCC, SEC, FINRA, or state Insurance Departments, is preferred. Experience engaging with the senior most executives of a large/complex organization and direct management of Audit Committee relationships is preferred. Decisions and actions have a material impact on the overall success of the organization's operations. Erroneous decisions may result in economic loss, substantial fines, and regulatory investigation. Participates in executive and senior management committees, providing a proactive risk view into strategic decision making while maintaining independence. Makes decisions on complex issues dealing with risk assessment, regulatory compliance and controls issues having high impact to the organization. Will oversee or personally handle sensitive, unusual or complex audits where a broader knowledge of auditing is required. Requires excellent knowledge of internal audit best-in-class practices (Internal Audit Professional Practices), risk management, internal controls, and regulatory guidance and expectations (OCC, SEC, State Insurance). Requires excellent knowledge of the Institute of Internal Auditor's (IIA) International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) to which the Internal Audit Division's methodology is aligned. Requires excellent knowledge of financial services products, services, and regulations. Builds a reputation as a trusted and valued partner to the Executive Committee and Executive Operating Council. Routinely interacts with company executives and leaders across the enterprise for the purpose of influencing and coordinating program level actions, determinations, policies, procedures, and strategic direction.
