Job Title: Drama/Athletics Counselor
Reports To: Program Director of Athletics
Position Purpose:
The Drama/Athletics Counselor is responsible for leading engaging drama lessons and participating in the athletics program. This role requires creativity, enthusiasm for theater, and a passion for working with children and adolescents in a dynamic camp environment.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Supervision and Camper Engagement
- Assist in the supervision and organization of campers during drama and athletics activities to ensure a safe and engaging experience.
- Foster communication, teamwork, and confidence among campers through structured activities.
- Ensure campers are actively engaged, properly supervised, and following safety protocols at all times.
2. Drama Instruction
- Teach drama lessons to beginner and intermediate campers for two hours daily.
- Develop and implement a drama program for junior (2nd-5th grade) and senior (6th-10th grade) campers.
- Guide campers in creating an original performance at the end of each session.
3. Athletics Participation
- Lead and instruct athletic activities for two-thirds of each day.
- Ensure a fun, engaging, and safe sports environment while maintaining TIC’s philosophy and spirit.
- Act as a coach, teacher, and mentor to two groups of 5-8 campers per session, fostering their athletic and social development.
- General skills in team and individual sports are a plus. Specialties in one or more of the following areas are desirable:
- Soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, hockey, football, volleyball, tennis, drama, yoga, gymnastics (tumbling only), martial arts, or dance.
4. Health & Safety
- Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff during all activities.
- Follow all TIC COVID-19 safety protocols and encourage adherence among campers.
- Be alert to campers’ needs, including first aid and emotional support, and communicate concerns to the appropriate staff.
5. Role Modeling & Camp Culture
- Set a positive example by actively engaging in camp activities, including theme days, games, and traditions.
- Promote a fun, inclusive, and creative environment where campers feel comfortable expressing themselves.
- Encourage teamwork and sportsmanship through both drama and athletics programming.
6. Communication & Administration
- Complete session-specific documentation, including Camper Highlights—individualized reports summarizing each camper’s achievements and experiences (4 times per summer).
- Maintain regular communication with the Specials Coordinator and fellow counselors to ensure a cohesive program.
- Provide and receive feedback to continuously improve both the drama and athletics programs.
Other Job Duties:
- Assist with camper arrival, departure, and transitions throughout the camp day.
- Support campers in social and personal development through drama and athletic activities.
- Participate in evaluations and other administrative tasks as requested.
Qualifications:
- Experience in teaching drama/theater.
- General athletic skills; experience in at least one of the listed sports is preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and adapt to a dynamic camp environment.
- Passion for working with children and adolescents.
- Must obtain necessary background checks and fingerprinting prior to working with children.
- Valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain before camp begins.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to lead and participate in active athletic and drama activities, including movement-based games and performances.
- Ability to observe camper behavior and ensure a safe environment.
- Visual and auditory ability to assess and respond to environmental or safety concerns.
Training & Schedule:
- Staff Orientation: (Required for all staff; some exceptions can be made for returning staff and school obligations) Week of June 10
- Camp Dates: (Preference given to staff who can work the entire summer; new staff MUST work 3 of 4 sessions) June 16-August 8
General Information:
- Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4 PM (Full-time, short-term position)
- Compensation: Based on skill, experience, and education. Paid bi-weekly via direct deposit. Attendance bonus for completion of all nine weeks.
- Housing: TIC is a day camp with no residential facilities; out-of-town staff must arrange their own housing.
