Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. Position Summary:
The TCC Music Program Accompanist will play the piano as an accompanist. The person will assist the TCC Chorus Director in using demonstration, guided practice, and appropriate rehearsal strategies and modeling for students to maximize their in-class learning. The TCC Chorus Accompanist will support the TCC Chorus Director in facilitating independent rehearsal and performance strategies for the student members of the chorus. The accompanist will also accompany student soloist recitals.
Functional Responsibilities:
- Attend all chorus class rehearsals and scheduled performances on time, according to the class schedule and published performance schedule.
- Provide keyboard accompaniments in multiple musical styles and genres at a high level of competence and musicianship for all choral and solo repertoire in class rehearsals and performances. This is to include written keyboard accompaniments, choral parts, and open score realization of a cappella choral pars as needed in rehearsals and/or performances.
- Improvise, adapt music, memorize musical selections, and while playing, changing emphases as needed.
- Adapt accompaniment role and playing style as needed to large ensembles, small groups, and soloists.
- Sight read music in rehearsal when needed.
- Practice music outside of rehearsals, if necessary. (Individual practice is uncompensated.)
- Meet with the director as needed to set tempos and work on technical issues in the music prior to rehearsal. (Any such meeting will be compensated.)
- Work effectively with TCC Music faculty, TCC staff and administration, TCC Music students, and other personnel.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with others and an ability to work with a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic population of students and staff, as well as those with physical and learning disabilities.
- Submit time sheets, and provide all necessary documentation for payroll per stated schedule.
- Accompany student soloist recitals.
- Perform other duties as needed as accompanist.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Professional certification in Music Performance, Music Education, or other appropriate, related musical field.
- Experience as a professional accompanist in a K-12 school setting, college or university, church or religious organization, or other appropriate related experience.
- Strong documented background in Music Theory.
- Strong documented background in Music Literature and musical styles of different genres.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Creative problem solving skills as appropriate to the Music discipline and performance context
- Commitment to work predetermined weekly schedule, providing an excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Be able to attend all mandatory training sessions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service communication skills to students, staff, faculty, and the public as well as proactive communication with faculty members, and co-workers.
- Provide positive and encouraging interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- Demonstrate/model excellent Employability Soft Skills.
