What you will do:

The Director of Accounting plays a crucial role in driving process enhancements and spearheading the implementation of advanced automation tools. This role is an enterprise level leadership position responsible for leading the organization’s accounting operations, design of the organizational structure, developing and implementing internal controls and optimizing business processes to align with strategic organizational goals. This role provides strong accounting and financial leadership to ensure the integrity of the financial statements and adherence to GAAP. The position manages a high performing team of ten, drives process improvements while adhering to internal control processes and complying with all tax laws and regulatory requirements. Additionally, the role plays a key part in financial audits and establishes short and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures.

Here’s a day in the life:

Optimize operational efficiency through advanced automation and process improvement:

  • Lead process improvement and automation initiatives to drive efficiency in business processes.

  • Develop comprehensive and customer-centric travel and expense reimbursement process in alignment with company objectives and internal controls.

  • Drive efficiency in close processes through best practices, standardization and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GCR) tools such as Blackline.

  • Identify and implement business process improvements, including automation initiatives to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial close and reporting.

Oversee daily accounting operations to ensure accurate financial statements:

  • Oversee credit analysis of potential customers and monitor company’s credit rating.

  • Oversee cash management controls and processes in collaboration with Treasury.

  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analysis.

  • Establish KPI benchmarks and evaluate the performance of the function, focusing on both efficiency and effectiveness. 

  • Lead accounting operations, including AR, AP, Fixed Assets and GL Teams ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with accounting standards.

  • Lead the organization’s interim and year-end external annual audit processes, ensuring timely completion and resolution of findings.

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations, including sales tax, payroll tax, and corporate tax filings.

  • Research and provide guidance on technical accounting topics and new and emerging accounting guidelines. Consult with external experts as needed.

Promote teamwork across the entity:

  • Collaborate with FP&A to ensure timely completion of forecasting & budget.

  • Lead and develop team including building business partnerships with cross-functional teams focused on proactive, insightful business driven outcomes.

  • Drive insights through financial analysis, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.

  • Support cross-functional teams by providing financial and technical expertise on new initiatives.

Provide team leadership and development opportunities:

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Serve as a key financial advisor to the leadership team, supporting decision-making with data-driven insights.

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • Directly manage a team of accounting professionals, providing leadership, training, and career development opportunities.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the accounting team.

  • Conduct regular performance reviews, goal-setting sessions, and provide mentorship opportunities for direct reports.

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or MBA highly desirable).

  • 10 years of experience in accounting and financial management with at least 5 years of leadership experience.

  • Experience in managing financial audits and ensuring tax and regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive process improvements.

  • Experience using Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) tools to manage and drive efficiency in month-end close (Blackline preferred).

  • Demonstrated success leading automation initiatives within accounting function.

  • History of success in change management/accounting process improvement.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, convey complex matters with simplicity, influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with ERP systems (MS D365, SAP, Oracle or similar) preferred.

  • Desirable experience:
