Position Description
Tilson is seeking a horizontal directional drill operator to join our established, long-term projects in various locations building out Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH). The ideal candidate for this role is enthusiastic, highly concerned with safety and quality, and cares about the quality of their work. This position will operate various types of horizontal directional drills including Ditch Witch and Vermeer. Tilson’s directional drill operator must have good knowledge of safely operate equipment around live utilities in the underground/telecom utility field. The candidate must have full knowledge of underground fiber installation operations and must be capable and proficient in equipment operations and good general knowledge in telecom space. The ideal candidate will be safety focused, customer and quality oriented, with a strong work ethic and a positive, CAN-DO attitude.

Responsibilities:
- Lead by example, attitude reflects leadership; lead through the understanding that the employees are the biggest asset Tilson has
- Motivate individuals and Team to create a positive and highly productive work environment
- Operational knowledge a variety of the newest horizontal directional drills Vermeer and Ditch Witch
- Trench, place duct, pull cable, and direct bury main-line and drops
- Perform restoration back to existing conditions
- At a minimum, the position requires a good working knowledge of telecommunications construction, familiarity with horizontal directional drills, ability to use cable placement equipment and tools, ability to identify and troubleshoot problems
- Must be able to safely coordinate directional drill equipment in and around congested neighborhoods where adults and children are present
- Ensure utility locates are correct and all underground utilities are identified and located before trenching or digging
- Constantly communicate with crew members
- Ensure potholes are dug and utilities are daylighted prior to crossing utilities
- Maintain accuracy in all reporting functions of directional drill shots
- Assist with safety events and is constantly on the lookout for changing conditions
- Ensure equipment is in proper working order and that all systems are working correctly
- Performing basic upkeep and maintenance of the equipment and communicating any equipment malfunctions or repair needs with their supervisor
- Communicating with fellow team members using hand or audio signals, to ensure the safe operation of Tilson equipment
- Must have knowledge of other hand and power tools of all types: power brooms, earth tampers, concrete saws, cement mixers, and various other equipment and tools
Position Requirements
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Strong work ethic
- Entry level skillset with less than 3 years’ experience
- Must have good communication skills and a positive attitude
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment
- The ability to work safely, with or without supervision
- 0-3 years of experience operating underground construction equipment such as those described above, required
- CDL A and tanker endorsement preferred
Travel Expectations: Travel in or outside the region at 90%
Traveling to and from the project site to the candidate's home is the responsibility of the candidate. Meal per diem will be paid at the rate of $45.00 per day, seven days per week while deployed. Lodging per diem will be paid at the rate of $100.00 per day, seven days per week while deployed.
Must be at least 21 years of age to meet Tilson’s driving eligibility requirements.
