Director of Nursing ( DON ) Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing ( DON ) is responsible to provide
nursing management, set resident standards for all direct care providers and
provide complete supervision and management of the nursing department. Has
twenty- four (24) hour responsibility, authority, and accountability for the
management of nursing care for residents and the supervision of the nursing
staff.
Director of Nursing (
DON ) Major Duties/Critical Tasks:
- Assume responsibility for the development
of nursing service objectives and performance standards of nursing practice for
each category of nursing personnel.
- Assume accountability for the
organization and implementation of approved policies and procedures.
- Interview, select, and hire staff both
professional and non-professional clinical staff who will plan, provide, and
evaluate care of the elderly and chronically ill residents.
- Evaluate the quality and productivity of
the nursing workload.
- Analyze and evaluate nursing staff ratio
based on acuity and resident’s needs.
- Interpret policy and procedure internally
for nursing staff, all ancillary staff, and externally for community and regulatory
agencies.
- Direct, evaluate and supervise all
resident care and initiate corrective action as necessary.
- Plan and direct nursing staff
orientation, in service education, and competency testing.
- Assess resident care needs and assist in
the development of individualized plans of resident care.
- Assume responsibility for implementation
of Clinical and Prospective Payment System Minimum Data Set completion
schedule.
- Assess resident pre-admission and/or
admission information and determine appropriate level of care.
- Assume responsibility for development and
implementation of nursing rehabilitation and restorative programs.

Education/Experience:
- Diploma from an accredited school of nursing
- Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN ) in the State of practice
- Management experience
