The Role:

TIME is seeking an experienced and dynamic editor to lead our breaking news operations. This pivotal role demands exceptional editorial judgment, strong leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate coverage across multiple teams and platforms. The ideal candidate will ensure TIME remains at the forefront of global news coverage by delivering timely, accurate, and insightful reporting to our audience. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee TIME's breaking news coverage.
  • Manage a team of news editors who assign and edit stories across a wide range of topics, including culture, economics, politics, global affairs, and lifestyle.
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure TIME's breaking news coverage is comprehensive, timely, and aligned with our editorial standards and mission.
  • Work closely with subject matter teams across the newsroom to ensure cohesive coverage of major news events and seamless collaboration between departments like photography, art, and video.
  • Coordinate and run coverage of major news events, working with teams across the newsroom to produce best in class coverage
  • Make critical decisions on coverage priorities, resource allocation, and story angles during breaking news situations.
  • Collaborate with the audience team to oversee a daily newsletter product that provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the news and TIME’s best journalism.
  • Ensure all breaking news content adheres to TIME's high standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and quality.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a high-level editorial role, with a strong background in breaking news coverage.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and mentoring editorial teams.
  • Exceptional news judgment and a deep understanding of global current events across various subject areas.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments and time zones.
  • Experience with digital news platforms and an understanding of audience engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive newsroom.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as breaking news demands.
  • A willingness to jump in and edit daily stories, particularly in a busy news moment
