POSITION OVERVIEW:
Provide technical accounting and procedural support to the director of finance in all aspects of the school’s financial operations. Perform professional accounting work of a relatively complex nature. Apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare monthly financial reports and annual financial statements by compiling information, preparing profit and loss statements, and utilizing appropriate accounting control procedures.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the posting of all journal entries, ensuring the accuracy of the general ledger and resolving any discrepancies. Perform adjusting entries, closing entries, and reversing entries as needed. Maintain all general ledger accounting records in an orderly manner.
- Regularly monitor bank accounts and reconcile accounts monthly. Maintain all bank and balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring their accuracy and completeness.
- Manage accounts receivable. Create invoices including tuition invoices to send to payers. Properly post receivables in anticipation of payment.
- Make all deposits and take them to the bank in a timely manner. Enter all cash receipts into the accounting system and maintain cash receipts and accounts receivable records in an orderly fashion.
- Reconcile payroll totals in the general ledger to CSC Paymaster reports monthly. Post payroll and benefit entries in the fund accounting system.
- Manage and remit employee retirement funds to TIAA and ESRI on a biweekly basis.
- Support and assist the Administrative Accounting Assistant with correct GL coding for all account payable transactions such as vendor invoices and credit card transactions.
- Maintain the fixed asset schedule. Ensure copies of all asset additions are available for audit purposes.
- Oversee the accounting of grants and monitor financial compliance with applicable restrictions and regulations. Ensure proper account coding for grants and prepare, coordinate, and file grant reports and fund requests.
- Supervise the input and handling of financial data and review for accuracy and conformity with GAAP, GASB fund accounting, and RIDE’s Uniform Chart of Accounts.
- Monitor and review accounting and system reports for accuracy and completeness, ensuring publicly submitted information is correct.
- Provide technical and professional accounting support to the director of finance in the execution of control functions and financial activity reporting.
- Establish, maintain, and coordinate the implementation of accounting control procedures. Recommend and implement changes to internal controls and operating systems, ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
- Conduct periodic internal audits and prepare audit programs. Assist with coordinating the annual A-133 audit by preparing work papers, schedules, and other required documentation for auditors.
- Recommend and implement accounting methods and policies to ensure conformity with GAAP. Research and implement changes in legislative and governmental pronouncements relating to governmental reporting.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide appropriate support and function as a backup to the accounts payable and payroll staff as needed.
- Provide appropriate support in the initiation, preparation and issuance of standard practices and procedures related to all accounting matters.
- Provide appropriate support to the director of finance in the establishment and coordination of relationships with numerous audit functions.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field with a minimum of five years of professional accounting experience, preferably in elementary/secondary education; or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience providing the knowledge, abilities, and skills cited above.
- Experience with fund accounting required.
- CPA preferred.
- Knowledge of MIP Fund Accounting application is preferred.
- Experience with personal computers and printers, and with word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and to follow directions and established plans in the completion of assignments.
- Excellent people skills and demonstrated ability to be a collaborator.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
$30 - $40 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
