Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner performs physical examinations and patient visits, orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests, makes appropriate referrals to either a physician or specialist as needed, collaborates with physicians and staff as necessary to provide consistent care to patients, ensures quality assurance standards are met, and displays a caring and professional attitude at all times.

The Nurse Practitioner will also operate as the Pediatric Emergency Nursing Coordinator and have the authority and oversight responsibilities in ensuring high-quality, comprehensive emergency medical services for children within the Emergency Department.

Essential Functions of the Nurse Practitioner

Scope of Practice
  • Focuses on providing primary care, preventive care, and treatment for children from infancy through adolescence, diagnosing and managing common pediatric conditions.
-Works with newborns in the well- nursery and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), delivering specialized care ill or high-risk infants. This includes attending high-risk deliveries, providing assessment, monitoring, and interventions for neonates and managing neonatal conditions.
  • Collaborates with physician supervisors through approved protocols to provide delivery of quality health care services. Consults regularly with supervising physician on problem cases or on cases not covered by protocols.
  • In emergency situations, administers lifesaving procedures and medication, but not to exceed current training.
  • Delegates duties according to authority appropriate for Texas Nursing Practice.

Responsibilities & Duties
Pediatric Patients
  • Provides routine and emergency care.
  • Conducts physical exams, take health histories, and perform diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnoses and treats common illnesses and conditions.
  • Provides immunizations, growth monitoring, and developmental assessments.
  • Educates families on health, nutrition, and wellness.
  • Reviews all x-rays, radiology, pathology, lab and other diagnostic reports in a timely fashion.
Nursery/NICU Patients
  • Provides specialized care for newborns, especially those requiring intensive monitoring and treatment.
  • Conducts thorough physical assessments of neonates, including assessing gestational age, vital signs, and reflexes.
  • Monitors and manages respiratory support, including mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, and CPAP.
  • Administers medications, including neonatal resuscitation and pharmacological interventions as needed.
  • Works with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care for newborns with congenital conditions.
  • Provides emotional and educational support to families of critically ill newborns.
  • Attends high risk deliveries.
  • Reviews all x-rays, radiology, pathology, lab and other diagnostic reports in a timely fashion.

Skills and Qualifications
Pediatric Patients
  • Ability to assess, diagnose, and treat pediatric patients.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with children and families.
  • Knowledge of pediatric pharmacology and developmental stages.
  • Ability to work in a pediatric healthcare setting.

Nursery/NICU Patients
  • Proficiency in neonatal resuscitation, including NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program).
  • Experience with newborn and infant critical care techniques, such as intubation, umbilical line placement, and blood gas analysis.
  • Strong skills in neonatal assessment and the ability to interpret neonatal lab results and imaging.
  • Ability to manage neonates in high-acuity settings such as NICUs.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach when providing care to newborns and supporting their families.

Education & Certification Requirements
  • Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited program.
  • Board certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP).
  • Active, unrestricted RN and APRN licenses in the state of practice.
  • Advanced certification in neonatal resuscitation and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) for NNP.
  • Continuing education specific to neonatal care for NNPs.

Collaborative Duties
  • Works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans for pediatric patients or newborns.
  • Provides education to families regarding care plans, treatments, and ongoing needs for both pediatric and neonatal patients.
  • Advocates for patient care and provide referrals to specialists when necessary.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement, staff meetings, and policies and procedures reviews.
  • Coordinates patient care with other members of the health care teams at the Rural Health Clinic, Community Prenatal Clinic and Titus Regional Medical Center.
  • Provides daily clinical supervision and routine clinical training for staff on treatment, infection control and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to and follows all patient experience initiatives.
  • Reports to and departs from work on time and as scheduled.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to deal with stress while maintaining composure.
  • Follows and adheres to TRMC vaccine policy(s) mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).


Essential Functions of the Pediatric Emergency Nursing Coordinator
  • Facilitates and participates in ED pediatric activities.
  • Serves as a liaison to appropriate pediatric care committees.
  • Ensures continuing education in pediatrics and that pediatric-specific elements are included in orientation for new staff members.
  • Ensures that initial and annual competency evaluations completed by the ED nursing staff are pertinent to children of all ages.
  • Promotes pediatric disaster preparedness for the ED and participates in hospital disaster preparedness activities.
  • Promotes patient and family education in illness and injury prevention.
  • Provides assistance and support for pediatric education.
  • Works alongside clinical leadership to ensure availability of pediatric equipment, medications, staffing, and other resources.
  • Collaborates with physicians to ensure that the ED is prepared to care for children of all ages, including children with special healthcare needs.

Work Experience
  • Five years’ experience of pediatric experience in a hospital or clinic setting is preferred.

Education
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advanced Practice Nurse required.
