Job Summary:
The Night Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of terminal operations during the night shift. This includes managing drivers, coordinating freight movement, ensuring on-time deliveries, and resolving any operational issues that may arise. The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills, with a strong focus on efficiency and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Night Shift Focus:
- Manage and supervise all terminal operations during the night shift (specify hours if possible, e.g., 6 PM to 6 AM).
- Ensure smooth and efficient freight flow during overnight hours.
- Proactively address and resolve any after-hours operational challenges.
- Driver Management:
- Dispatch and manage night shift drivers, ensuring on-time pick-ups and deliveries.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, providing clear instructions and support.
- Monitor driver performance and address any issues related to safety or compliance.
- Review and approve driver logs and documentation.
- Logistics & Coordination:
- Coordinate with daytime operations and logistics teams to ensure seamless transitions.
- Monitor and track freight movement to ensure timely delivery schedules are met.
- Optimize routes and schedules to maximize efficiency and minimize delays.
- Work with Logistics to ensure all night loads are covered efficiently.
- Problem Solving & Decision Making:
- Make quick and effective decisions to resolve operational issues under pressure.
- Implement proactive solutions to prevent recurring problems.
- Analyze data and identify areas for process improvement.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce all safety regulations and company policies.
- Conduct safety checks and ensure a safe working environment.
- Investigate and report any accidents or incidents.
- Communication & Reporting:
- Provide regular updates to the Terminal Manager on night operations.
- Prepare and submit reports on key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the transportation industry, with a focus on operations; 5 years preferred.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or management role, preferably with night shift responsibilities.
- Strong ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work consistently during night shift hours.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work in various environmental conditions.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Ability to hear and smell for potential hazards.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Supervises night shift personnel, including Drivers, Dispatchers, and other Operations Staff.
