Tiverton High School Life Skills Special Education Teacher
Job Description
Under the direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor/Administrator, the Special Education teacher is to work in
partnership with parents, students, and professional staff to promote student achievement and is responsible for the education of
students with special needs while creating a flexible program and class environment favorable for learning and personal growth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develops and implements Individualized Education Plans and behavior plans.
Implements data collection systems and accurately collects and summarizes data.
Monitors, redirects, and modifies student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance, administering behavior
intervention programs to identify students
Teaches subject matter, utilizing the course of study adopted by the school district and the Board of Education, correlated with
other appropriate learning activities.
Develop lesson plans, adapt the curriculum to meet individual student needs, and utilize effective teaching techniques in
translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction.
Engages students in learning through the use of content activities and assignments, student groupings, a wide variety of
instructional materials, and the structure and pacing of the lessons.
Provides specific and timely feedback to students.
Evaluates students' academic and personal growth keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
Understands various functions of behavior when determining interventions and developing and implementing behavior intervention
plans.
Models and trains program staff on the implementation of specific programs and procedures to address student goals.
Collaborates with school team members to provide instruction and support effectively.
Develops lesson plans, adapt the curriculum to meet individual student needs, and utilize effective teaching techniques in
translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction.
Prepares students and sets goals for transition to post-secondary life skills, education, and training.
Utilizes computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction.
Coordinates vocational and skill training within the community and job sites
Maintains classroom organization and discipline.
Provides and maintains a safe and supervised environment in the classroom and the school grounds.
Communicates with parents through conferences and other means of discussing academic and personal progress; interprets
school programs.
Supervises and directs paraprofessionals for the benefit of student learning.
Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities, as needed.
Manages student files to maintain compliance based on IDEA guidelines and regulations.
Conforms to district policies, including attendance, absences, and evaluations.
Possesses problem-solving skills and demonstrates effective communication skills.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal or district office administration.
Regular work attendance is critical

RIDE Certification Requirements:
* Secondary Grades Special Education Teacher, Grades 7-12 and/or
* All Grades Special Education - Severe Intellectual Disability, Grades PK-12 Position Type: Full-time
