What are the responsibilities and job description for the Carpenter position at Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority?
The Carpenter is a skilled craftsman to construct or repair homes and other facilities throughout Southeast Alaska using a variety of hand and power tools. Installs weatherization or mold prevention improvements to reduce home energy consumption and improve home air quality.
II. Authority :
Reports to DCM Project Superintendent or designee.
III. Duties and Responsibilities :
Performs detailed residential carpentry work at the direction of project superintendent or project coordinator. Framing of walls; hanging drywall; install exterior siding; installing cabinets; installing insulation; adding fixtures and finishes; install windows; install lighting; determine size and material needs and using power equipment to cut to size; Perform carpentry techniques to reduce home / building energy consumption. Position will require construction related to residential repair / rehabilitation. Position will require travel to various Southeast Alaska communities (up to 50% of time traveling).
IV. Required Knowledge, Ability and Skills :
- Knowledge of residential carpentry
- Ability to work independently
- Understanding of construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, and safety
- Ability to read blueprints and accurately measure and cut dimensional lumber and plywood.
- Proficient in the correct methods of weather proofing of windows and doors during installations.
- Experience working on roofs and associated tasks such as fascia, soffit and proper ridge vent installation.
- Some knowledge of weatherization protocol to limit air flow during early phases of construction, i.e. plumbing and electrical penetrations, backer rod, etc.
- Experience with basic residential ventilation systems such as bathroom and kitchen fans.
- Ability to work through difficult situations in a considerate and positive manner.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding programs and clients.
- Ability to drive passenger vehicles or trucks.
- Able and willing to travel by boat or small plane to Southeast Alaska communities up to 50% of time.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
