ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs, administers and evaluates cardiac diagnostic studies (Holter/Event Monitor, Electrocardiogram (EKG), Exercise Stress Test, etc.) in outpatient clinic setting.
- Performs, administer and evaluates pulmonary function diagnostic studies (Spirometry, Lung Volumes, Diffusion Capacity, six (6) Minute Walk, etc.) in outpatient clinic setting.
- Performs, administers, monitors and evaluates pulse oximetry diagnostic studies.
- Performs arterial punctures and analysis of arterial and venous blood gas specimens.
- Performs patient assessment procedures and administers patient assessment questionnaires.
- Provides patient education and clinical support for (pulmonary illness/disease, medication management, oxygen therapy, respiratory therapy equipment/supply, etc.) in outpatient clinic setting.
- Utilizes computers, printer, scanner, software and applications to perform front office procedures, perform testing procedures, download/compile equipment data and create test reports.
- Documents all respiratory therapy patient encounters in the patient electronic medical record. Receives consults and orders from medical providers related to outpatient respiratory care.
- Verifies current and appropriate medical provider orders, if necessary contacts supervisor.
- Acts as a consultant to the medical providers on matters of respiratory care and the practice of respiratory therapy.
- Performs regular maintenance, calibration, assembly, quality control of respiratory therapy equipment, cardiopulmonary diagnostic equipment, pulmonary function diagnostic and blood gas diagnostic equipment.
- Reports and completes repair requisition to Healthcare Technology Services for all malfunctioning equipment. Ensures uninterrupted supply of necessary accessories and supplies. Maintains inventory as needed.
- May independently provide emergency Respiratory Therapy to all patients that requires extensive skill and training as necessary.
- Administers bronchial hygiene therapy through chest physiotherapy (CPT) i.e., percussion, vibration and postural drainage, incentive spirometry, diaphragmatic breathing and cough technique. Performs airway care and maintenance. Performs nasotracheal suctioning and suctioning of artificial airways. Performs tracheostomy tube care.
- Administers aerosol and humidification therapy.
- Administers respiratory medications as prescribed by medical provider.
- Initiates, monitors and discontinues all modes of oxygen therapy.
- Obtains and/or induces adequate sputum specimens for lab analysis.
- Assists in emergency and/or elective intubation, oral or nasal, on patient with impending respiratory failure/cardiac arrest.
- Assists with training and orientation of students and new employees. Provides continuing education to hospital clinical staff on current and new developments in respiratory care.
- Completes continuing education units as per department policy. Participates and completes required department and hospital training and competencies.
- Participates in the development and revision of outpatient departmental protocols, policies and procedures.
- Participates fully in quality assurance and performance improvement process within the department and hospital.
- Attends departmental and assigned hospital meetings.
- Required to participate in community outreach activities.
- May be required to work in an inpatient setting during emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
- Two (2) years of clinical experience in general respiratory care.
Education:
- Associate’s Degree from and accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Licensure/ Certifications:
- Active unrestricted Respiratory Therapist license from any U.S. State or Territory.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
- Obtain Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) Credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care with one (1) year from date of hire and maintain certification.
- Valid American Heart Association Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
- Valid American Heart Association Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and maintain.
- Valid American Heart Association Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and maintain certification.
