Job Overview
The music teacher is responsible for delivering instruction and support to students with visual impairment, enabling them to appreciate the art of music as part of the general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of people in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony and explorations in music to elementary/secondary students. Use courses of study adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) and other appropriate learning activities.
· Design a well-rounded music curriculum and structure daily class schedules to ensure that preparation, practice, and teaching can be effectively completed within the designated timeframe.
· Offer personalized instruction to individuals and small groups to tailor the curriculum to meet each student's needs.
· Incorporate a variety of musical genres, both traditional and contemporary, that are suitable for the students' age and skill levels.
· Manage the storage and utilization of school-owned equipment; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as needed.
· Set and uphold expectations for student conduct to ensure a structured and effective atmosphere during practice sessions, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
· Assess the musical development and performance of each student, taking into account their individual contributions to the group's overall performance.
· Organize, practice, and guide students in musical performances for both the school and the community. Utilize an understanding of district protocols and the restrictions placed on performances.
· Choose and request books, musical instruments, and teaching materials; keep necessary inventory records updated.
· Engage with parents and school counselors regarding the student's progress.
· Recognize student needs and collaborate with other professionals to evaluate and assist students in addressing issues related to health, attitude, and learning.
· Collaborate with the school administration to deliver musical performances for school events, graduation ceremonies, and community functions.
· Oversee students during extracurricular activities throughout the designated work hours.
· Engage in curriculum and various developmental initiatives.
· Engage in faculty committees and support student activities.
· Ensure ongoing professional skill development by participating in in-service training offered by the district and/or engaging in independently chosen professional growth activities related to music.
Other Functions
· Work closely with occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other specialists to ensure a holistic approach to student learning.
· Raise awareness of assistive technology resources available to students, families, and educators.
· Create and curate instructional materials, including tutorials and guides, to facilitate the appreciation of music.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualification
· Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required.
· Must have a valid Tennessee teaching license with the appropriate content endorsement to teach Music or a valid out of state license that can successfully be transferred to Tennessee.
· A SPED Vision Prek-12 endorsement required.
· If no current Visually Impaired certification must be willing to obtain one, beginning an approved program within the first two years of employment.
· Ability to sing and play piano
· Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience preferred.
· Experience working with wide range of students with visual impairments, including students with different visual impairments, additional disabilities, and complex learning needs. Preferred not required.
Special Knowledge/Skills
SKILLS are required to be proficient in music theory, vocal methods, and group dynamics. Effective leadership and communication abilities. Capacity to encourage and energize vocalists. Effective communication and strong leadership abilities. Learning music theory while also practicing sight-reading and improvisation. Versatile singing skills in multiple styles. Skilled in playing instruments (e.g., piano, guitar) for accompaniment and teaching. Skills in managing group dynamics and promoting a positive learning environment. Skills in assessing student progress and giving feedback. Skills in supporting students and alleviating performance anxiety. Proficient in managing lesson plans, rehearsals, and administrative tasks. Skills in promoting concerts and community engagement online.
KNOWLEDGE is required to have a strong understanding of Knowledge of music's fundamental elements: notation, rhythm, scales, chords, and harmony. Expertise in vocal techniques, breathing, pitch, and timbre. Knowledge of musical genres, composers, and their historical contexts. Knowledge of diverse choral music, including classical, contemporary, world, and traditional genres. Understanding of teaching methods, learning styles, and developmental stages in music education. Skills in arranging music for vocal parts and basic composition knowledge. Knowledge of music composition, recording, and education tools. Proficiency in piano or another accompanying instrument and knowledge of ensemble instruments. Knowledge of national and state music education standards and assessment. Familiarity with disability rights laws and regulations (e.g., ADA, IDEA) and their impact on technological access.
ABILITY is required to organize concerts, contests, and performances, including logistics and rehearsals. Ability to incorporate creative approaches into teaching, such as using innovative methods to engage students. Teach sight-singing (reading music at first sight) and ear training (recognizing pitches, intervals, and rhythms). Develop comprehensive lesson plans that cater to the needs and skill levels of various students. Convey musical concepts clearly and motivate students through verbal and non-verbal communication. Plan and conduct efficient rehearsals, focusing on improving performance and preparing for concerts. Inspire students to find joy in music and encourage them to achieve their personal best.

- Direct deposit of paycheck on a 12-month schedule is required.
