Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Electrical Superintendent, and general supervision of the Construction Superintendent, performs all electrical tasks in residential new construction/repair, and preventive maintenance in TNHA facilities. TNHA construction is a team environment and all trades support each other when position specific work is slow. Must be able to wire a newly constructed home with a high degree of quality and code compliance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a wide variety of electrical work required for new construction, repair, maintenance, installation, renovation, and modernization of electrical systems focusing on residential units and TNHA facilities and equipment in accordance with blue prints, state and local building codes, and NEC.
  • Installs and connects all types of wires in residential units and TNHA facilities to circuit breakers, transformers, outlets, or other components using appropriate hand tools as well as power tool and other equipment to test connections and ensure the compatibility and safety of components.
  • Installs, maintains, and upgrades existing electrical systems and equipment, both high and low voltage, including lighting systems, fixtures, wiring conduits, motors and other electrical equipment; inspects circuits for specified shielding and grounding.
  • Locates and determines electrical malfunctions using test equipment; repairs by such methods as replacing burned out elements, fuses, and replacing defective wiring, cleaning and repairing motors.
  • Documents information in preventive maintenance files on electrical equipment, machinery, and monitors a preventive maintenance program.
  • Must be able to work in a professional manner with coworkers, clients, and community members,
  • Provides on-the-job training for maintenance personnel and village residents in skills of general electrical trade.
  • Observes TNHA safety rules and regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and submits written work cost estimates, material lists and reports.
  • Works independently, accurately, and detailed in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
  • Performs basic and complex calculations, planning, and monitoring for projects as needed.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of all information obtained through professional and client interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • State of Alaska Journeyman Electrician License with current Certificate of Fitness.
  • Minimum of (3) years as a residential electrician.
  • Ability to work as a team member with other trades.
  • Ability to wire a newly constructed home to a high degree of quality and code compliance.
  • Knowledge of electrical construction and maintenance of residential units and facilities including security, fire alarm systems, installation of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, and automatic starting equipment.
  • Knowledge and adherence of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of National Electric Codes, state and local building codes.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of residential units and TNHA facilities.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, safety, and maintenance.
  • Ability to read blueprint, building codes, and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
  • Comfortable traveling by small aircraft to outlying Arctic Slope villages.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets TNHA insurance criteria.

Preferred:

  • Alaskan Native/American Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and/or understand conversational Inupiaq.
  • Five (5) years of residential electrical repair and installation experience.
  • Boiler electrical repair and wiring in new heat systems.
  • Two (2) years of Arctic work experience
  • 10-hour OSHA Construction certification.
  • Knowledge of Arctic residential construction methods.

 

Physical Demands: This role frequently involves working outside in cold weather and requires regular physical activity, including heaving lifting. It also involves frequent movement, such as walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and climbing. Visual acuity for reaching and operating equipment is required. This is a safety-sensitive position, requiring alertness and adherence to safety protocols at all time.


Work Environment: The work environment is both indoor and outdoor settings, often exposed to cold weather conditions. It may involve working around heavy machinery and in areas with varying noise levels.
