Benefits of Teaching in Indianapolis

  • Flexible Teaching Locations: As an employee of Indianapolis Public Schools or Township Charter Schools in Center Township, Fellows have the unique flexibility to start their career at a school that fits their skills and interests. Wherever you teach, you will be working in a state that is recognized for being on the cutting edge of innovative education.
  • Classroom-Centered Preparation: Fellows prepare to enter the classroom by participating in a five-week training experience. Where traditional teacher preparation leaves little time for hands-on skill-building, our innovative training is centered around actual teaching experience in summer school classrooms. Fellows practice core skills that they need to be successful on their first day of teaching and ground their pedagogy in culturally responsive teaching.
  • Full Salary and Benefits: While pursuing certification and your Master of Arts in Teaching through our partner university, Marian University, Fellows work full-time at a district or charter school and will earn the same starting salary plus comprehensive benefits as a first-year teacher. You will start as the teacher of record for the 2025-26 school year. Starting salary is approximately $53,460 plus comprehensive benefits.
  • Certification: During your first two years as a full-time teacher, you will also complete certification coursework through our partnership with Marian University, where you will earn your certification and a Master of Arts in Teaching. You are responsible for Marian University’s tuition and fees, which total approximately $13,500 for the two-year program. You will be eligible for TNTP's AmeriCorps program to receive two consecutive education awards of $7,395 that can be applied to tuition. Fellows are also eligible to apply for Financial Aid.
  • Black Educator Excellence Cohort (BEEC): Understanding the diversity gap in teaching, the BEEC offers the opportunity for participating Indianapolis Teaching Fellows to build community and fellowship with other BEEC members. This network of Black educators aims to limit feelings of isolation and to tackle issues that impact Black teachers more than their peers while working towards a more inclusive and impactful educational environment. Cohort members will receive tuition assistance, certification exam support, and networking and fellowship with a community of new and established Black educators.
