We are seeking an Elementary Literacy Coach to join our educational team. The Literacy Coach will play a critical role in improving literacy instruction and student outcomes across the elementary grades. This position requires a passion for literacy, strong instructional skills, and the ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators.
SALARY
Commensurate with certification and experience based on the Wicomico County Salary Schedule for Teachers. Includes benefits package.
HOURS
Full time 10-month position (190 contract days).
Contract Unit: This position is part of the Unit I (Certificated) bargaining unit.
FLSA: Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS
Must hold or be eligible for Maryland Professional Certificate.
Reading teacher or specialist endorsement is preferred. Additional training in reading beyond certification preferred. Master’s degree preferred, but not required.
National Board Certification in Literacy or purusing certification is preferred.
Knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards for Reading/English Language Arts.
At least five (5) years of satisfactory classroom experience required.
Evidence of successful staff development leadership experience preferred.
Leadership and personal qualifications to work successfully in collaboration with other staff developers and instructional staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- The core role of a literacy coach is to develop teachers' literacy practices through non-evaluative, consistent, job-embedded professional learning and support. This role should include a comparable schedule that allows this critical work to occur daily.
Coach Responsibilities:

Literacy Resource Development and Sharing
- Professional Development: Provide ongoing professional development to teachers on effective literacy instruction strategies, phonics, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary development.
- Instructional Coaching: Work one-on-one and in small groups with teachers to model effective literacy instruction, observe classroom practices, and provide constructive feedback to enhance teaching practices.
- Curriculum Support: Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive literacy curriculum that aligns with district standards and promotes student success.
- Data Analysis: Analyze student performance data to identify trends, inform instruction, and support teachers in using data-driven decision-making to improve literacy outcomes.
- Resource Management: Identify and provide resources, including books, instructional materials, and technology, to support effective literacy instruction.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and other instructional coaches to create a cohesive and supportive learning environment.
