English Language Development Teacher

JOB GOALS:
The English Language Development (ELD) Teacher provides specialized English as a Second Language instruction in designated schools and classrooms to multilingual English Learners (EL) for the purposes of developing their ability to effectively perform in English and gain proficiency with the English language. They also work to establish and maintain effective culturally and linguistically responsive communication with students and their parent/guardian concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of assigned students as well as strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- MA DESE Licensure: Teacher, English as a Second Language, PreK-6 & 5-12
- Experience teaching students with a wide range of abilities, interests, and needs
- Experience supporting multilingual/multicultural students
- Bachelor’s Degree required (Advanced educational preparation in the area of ESL preferred)
- Knowledge and understanding of ELD instruction and second language acquisition.
- Such other alternatives as the Superintendent may deem acceptable and appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets and honors students' cultural and linguistic needs, interests, and abilities of multilingual students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals aligned to the objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and communicate these objectives to students.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides feedback regarding their progress toward English proficiency.
- Assists with providing language assessment of students on a regular basis and maintain appropriate certifications to administer the language screeners and assessments (e.g., ACCESS).
- Plans and implements ELD lessons that align with Massachusetts and WIDA Standards and students' English proficiency levels.
- Provides effective ELD classroom techniques and instruction to enhance English language acquisition and to gain academic language.
- Demonstrates effective techniques of classroom management, behavioral intervention, and communication to engage students.
- Demonstrates cultural proficiency and use of effective and culturally relevant instructional practices.
- Provides SEI Collaborative Consultation with SEI teacher(s) to promote multilingual students' academic growth and achievement.
- Prepares for and assists with organization of EL student reclassification meetings for monitoring and for those ready to transition out of EL services.
- Attends professional English Language Development (ELD) meetings as well as serves on building or district committees.
- Understands and complies with the state policies, rules, and regulations regarding English Learners.
- Such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal, Department Head and/or Assistant Superintendent.
SALARY: In accordance with FEA Unit A contract
