The Recreation Specialist is responsible for implementing and facilitating recreational program and activities for youth
Goal of our Sheltered Hearts Program
Our goal is to provide safe and timely reunification for a child and their family or suitable sponsor.
In partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Sheltered Hearts Program provides family reunification and short-term shelter for children who have entered the United States without a guardian. Children reside in our family-style cottage located on our 2,000-acre campus while our bilingual staff provide a safe and nurturing environment for children.

Job Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum 1 - 3 years of experience facilitating recreational program and activities for youth
- Experience working with at risk youth and/or non-profit experience preferred
- Ability to converse in English and Spanish
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to work with a culturally and economically diverse population
Job Responsibilities
- Implements and facilitates recreation program including but not limited to sports, leisure, cultural and therapeutic based activities. Collaborates with staff to ensure programs and activities are being completed including tracking attendance and reporting successes and/or challenges.
- Monitors and completes care and maintenance of all equipment and facilities. Monitors and ensures equipment and facilities are operated correctly. Maintains list of supplies and equipment.
- Encourages and supports adventure based recreation programs. Encourages youth participation; supervises, teaches and acts as a role model for youth.
- Adheres to agency policies and procedures; follows and supports agency mission, vision and values including participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
- This position will comply will all federal, state and local laws and regulations, including those or ORR, ICE and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
