Position Summary :
Under limited supervision, supervises the professional activities of the Prosecutor's Office to ensure quality legal representation. Presents criminal complaints and prosecutes individuals accused of violating civil and / or criminal laws or ordinances of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization / department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Improves professional staff effectiveness by coaching, counseling, and training for employees; delegating, monitoring, and appraising tasks in such areas as case assignments, pleadings, and preparation of legal documents, reports and correspondence.
- Performs and conducts research to assist clients and inform staff of new projects, developments, and services.
- Coordinates the adjudication of offenders with the United States Attorney; works with tribal, federal, and state agencies to address the issue of gangs within the Nation.
- Receives, reviews, and screens legal issues and facts presented for judicial disposition to determine the proper course of action.
- Interviews clients, gathers evidence, and analyzes pertinent information in civil, criminal, and other cases to formulate defense and prepare for legal action.
- Conducts research, interviews clients, and witnesses and handles other details in preparation for trial.
- Prepares legal briefs, develops strategy, arguments and testimony in preparation for presentation of case; Handles specific cases assigned by Chief Prosecutor.
- Supervises and participates in the preparation and trial of cases in tribal court and courts of other jurisdictions.
- Coordinates activities of staff to ensure effective operation of the Tribal court docket.
- Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals.
- Confers with colleagues to establish and verify basis for legal proceedings.
- Maintains all appropriate documentation as required.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research; reviewing case histories and rulings; attending workshops, conferences and seminars; establishing networks; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
- Acts as Chief Prosecutor as assigned.
- Contributes to a team effort and performs other job related duties as assigned.
