Position Summary :
Under close supervision, assists in research, field and / or technical investigations and surveys, and statistical analyses and data interpretations; gathers data for a non-invasive detection study on jaguars in the Baboquivari Mountains on the Tohono O'odham Nation. Survey for medium and large animals on the Tohono O'odham Nation using remote automated camera traps to assess the distribution and abundance of wildlife species.
The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Assists in identifying specific sites for camera placements to monitor medium and large sized animals; Mountain Lions, deer, javelin, coati, ocelot, jaguars and many other species.
- Assists in identifying felid and other large mammal signs to select a high probability area for camera placement.
- Assists in identifying common native plants.
- Learns to operates a GPS unit and other data tracking systems.
- Searches the general monitoring station area for animal tracks and collects data on identified and unidentified tracks to include; photo of track with measuring ruler, size of track, species name (if identified) and other relevant information as found.
- Learns and obtains Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates using assigned GPS unit of camera sites and conducts a general vegetation survey of the immediate area.
- Completes a datasheet and / or enters information in to mobile field computer.
- Downloads monitoring station information from field computer into office workstation; downloads images from cameras onto field computer / laptop or replaces full memory cards in cameras with blank ones.
- Checks all equipment to ensure equipment is working properly and repairs or submits equipment for repair.
- Revisits each monitoring station to retrieve data from the cameras.
- May camp overnight in identified safe location.
- Makes recommendations for easily identifiable corrective action based on monitoring station findings.
