Job Summary
Under general supervision, serves civil process, Court Orders and warrants for the Tom Green County Constables and performs related duties as assigned. This is the full-time Deputy position with the Tom Green County Constables.
Positions in this classification require Texas Law Enforcement Certification and may perform related law enforcement duties as assigned or necessary..
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Locates individuals with warrants of arrest, or court ordered civil process.
Serves civil papers, subpoenas, and misdemeanor warrants, as assigned.
Maintains records of attempts to serve process.
Serves as Bailiff for Justice of the Peace Courts and others as requested.
Prepares court affidavits and other court documents to be presented before District, County and Justice Courts.
Arrests and books violators and complete necessary paperwork and reports.
Testifies in court as required.
Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints, as needed to assist other agencies.
Performs other law enforcement duties such as: assisting other agencies at the scene of a traffic accident, taking reports, and directing traffic; assisting stranded motorists; conducting searches of buildings, vehicles, outdoor areas, persons, and other objects to detect potential weapons, contraband, evidence, hazards, stolen property; assisting federal, state, local law enforcement officials with investigations and emergencies.
Assists the Environmental Health Department with public nuisance investigations.
Insures that assigned vehicle receives periodic vehicle maintenance:
Attends training, seminars, conferences, and meetings, as appropriate or directed.
Performs special assignments or other duties as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of process serving policies and procedures and pertinent criminal and civil law; knowledge of law enforcement and departmental procedures and policies; knowledge of basic investigation procedures and rules of evidence; knowledge of the operation and care of small firearms; knowledge of first aid and CPR procedures.
Ability to safely use vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment; ability to operate a computer to prepare records and reports; ability to skip trace and locate persons for the purpose of serving process; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, the District and County Attorneys' offices, other departmental employees, and the general public; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to perform job responsibilities in a timely and satisfactory manner; and good driving record.
Skill in both oral and written communication and interpersonal relations.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Prolonged periods of sitting and driving; periodic walking, standing, bending, and reaching; occasional running and physical effort to apprehend and/or control offenders; subject to verbal abuse, physical assault, and other potentially dangerous situations; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience Required:
Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy.
Certificates and Licenses:
License as a Peace Officer from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Valid Texas Class C driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
Experience
- Previous experience in report writing, criminal investigation, and law enforcement is preferred
- Possession of a valid driver's license is required
- Certification in CPR and first aid is advantageous
- Military experience or leadership training is a plus
