Class Summary:
Under general supervision, operates light equipment and performs manual labor duties on a Road & Bridge crew.
This classification is distinguished from Equipment Operator II by the operation of light equipment and the performance of manual labor tasks as the principle duties. Equipment Operator I’s may occasionally operate heavy equipment for training or workload management purposes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Drives light equipment such as dump trucks, water and oil trucks, rollers, brooms, and front end loaders.Drives tractor or truck with tanker trailer or dump trailer to haul materials to worksite.Operates front-end or track loader to load and unload equipment and materials.Drives pickup truck to transport crew members or haul materials to work sites.Operates a tractor with shredder to mow roadsides; operates hand held weed and grass trimmers to cut vegetation around sign posts, road markers, and bridge railings.Performs road repair tasks such as crack sealing and patching, tamping, packing and leveling dirt, asphalt, and other materials.Clears brush, cleans drainage ditches, and trims grass and weeds around signs and reflectors.Assists in installing culverts, drainage boxes, road signs and markers.Clears debris around bridges and low water crossings.Places barricades and traffic cones; directs traffic, as assigned.Assists in maintaining vehicles by checking oil, water, hydraulic fluid, and tires.
Works on and operates equipment in a safe and prudent manner; follows all County safety policies and procedures.May operate heavy equipment for training purposes, during the absence of other crew members, or as needed; performs other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of light vehicle and equipment operation; knowledge of basic road construction and maintenance procedures and materials.
Ability to understand and follow instructions and work in an independent manner; ability to tolerate outdoor working conditions, including extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and high noise levels; ability to maintain required licenses and a good driving record.
Skill in the operation of trucks and other light equipment; skill in oral communication and interpersonal relations.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Works outdoors and is subjected to hot and cold temperatures, dust, dirt, fumes, high noise levels; prolonged periods of walking, standing, carrying, bending, and reaching; periodic lifting up to 60 lbs; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience Required:
Some experience in the operation of highway construction/maintenance equipment is preferred.
Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of a Texas Class A (CDL) driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Must obtain an X endorsement within six months of employment.
